Arsenal secured a comfortable 3-0 Champions League victory over Lille at the Emirates tonight, although the final scoreline makes the game sound considerably more exciting than it was for the first hour!Goals from Jurrien Timber, Eberechi Eze and Bukayo Saka, all within seven minutes, turned a fairly uninspiring evening into another convincing European win for Mikel Arteta’s side.A first half best forgottenAs we discussed in our match preview, Arsenal needed to be more clinical in front of goal, but there was precious little urgency in the opening 45 minutes.Timber delivered some promising balls into the box, Merino had a header saved, and both Lewis-Skelly and Eze tested Lille goalkeeper Berke Özer.Lille briefly thought they had taken the lead in the 23rd minute, only for VAR to rule the goal out for offside.Otherwise, it was a slow, rather frustrating affair. Arsenal looked the more likely to score, but neither side seemed particularly determined to take control.Half-time arrived at 0-0, and we were certainly hoping for something better!(Photo by Julian Finney/Getty Images)Seven minutes of Arsenal magicThe second half initially offered little improvement, with Arteta preparing a triple substitution to inject some much-needed energy. But before the changes could be made, Timber finally broke the deadlock in the 64th minute!Arteta then introduced Saka, Havertz and Ødegaard, and suddenly Arsenal came alive.Eze doubled Arsenal’s advantage just three minutes later, assisted by Saka, before Saka himself made it 3-0 in the 71st minute.Three goals in seven minutes, and what had been a rather dull evening suddenly became a comfortable Arsenal victory!Suddenly, the Gunners were playing some lovely football, and Lille had absolutely no answer. There was also a lovely moment when former Gunner Olivier Giroud entered the pitch to a warm reception from the Emirates crowd, while young Max Dowman enjoyed another late appearance.Ultimately, a very comfortable victory, even if it took Arsenal over an hour to get going. Three goals, three points and another clean sheet. We certainly can’t complain about the result! What did you make of Arsenal’s performance tonight?
