Football finance expert Stefan Borsen has made an interesting claim about the revenue Tottenham Hotspur earn through hosting the NFL at their stadium.Moving into the new stadium in 2019 has put Spurs on a different financial footing, not just because of its bigger capacity but also due to one built-in feature of the venue. The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium has a retractable football surface under which sits an artificial surface, which is used to host concerts, NFL, and other sporting events.According to reports, Spurs earn £6m per game at their stadium, compared to just £1m per matchday at White Hart Lane. The stadium is also the home to the NFL in the UK, with the venue hosting at least two games per season.Photo by Ryan Pierse/Getty ImagesStefan Borsen suggests Tottenham are making well short of £6m per NFL gameBorsen believes the figures reported on Tottenham’s earnings per NFL game are not completely accurate. The finance expert suggested the Lilywhites may not be earning more than £1m per NFL game hosted at their stadium, but he conceded that having an extra income stream is consequential for the North London club. When asked if Spurs earn £6m per NFL game hosted at their stadium, Borsen told Football Insider: “I think it’s unlikely, to be honest with you. That might be the gross revenue of the game. Does that sound about right? “It could be, but they won’t be taking £6million as their hosting fee per game, I would not think. And clearly anyway, there’s quite a lot of cost that goes into an NFL game.“There’s the set-up and the pitch change and all that stuff, and the staffing. I don’t think these games are worth much more than £1m at the bottom line. I’m a bit sceptical when you hear about these numbers at Spurs, and you hear about how important they are.“I would take it with a pinch of salt generally, because not that much of it is falling through to the bottom line. “Even where there’s decent money on the revenue. Now, that’s not to say it’s not a good thing for Spurs to have.“Clearly, if you have a completely separate revenue stream, that’s a whole load of non-football events. Clearly that’s very positive. It’s just not as lucrative as is made out, from what I can see.”Borsen missed the main financial benefit to Spurs from hosting NFL and other eventsIn a recent report, Alasdair Gold explained that, as per the club’s NFL arrangement, Tottenham make money from the original NFL deal, the rent fee paid by the NFL, and through enormous sales of food, drink and merchandise from their megastore. The funds made from food and drink sales likely constitute the majority of the club’s earnings from these events, and those will undoubtedly be substantial as spectators are allowed to eat and drink in their seats during the NFL.Gold also revealed that the revenue Tottenham earn from the NFL has risen between five and 10 per cent over the last couple of years.Borsen also misses the fact that the NFL only constitutes a fraction of the club’s additional revenue stream, with the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium also hosting several concerts and other sporting events.READ MORE: Barcelona plan Lucas Bergvall move as Tottenham contract contains release clauseThe post Tottenham’s NFL revenue is overstated, according to one football finance expert appeared first on Spurs Web.
