SPY Oct 16: The trend-down day that punishes dip buyersState Street SPDR S&P 500 ETFBATS:SPYKaneD_Discipline_TradesFriday was a textbook trend-down day on SPY, the kind that does the most damage to retail traders. It wasn’t a crash. It was a steady grind lower, with every bounce failing. What the chart showed in real time (15m): Price, the 9 EMA, and the 21 EMA all stayed below VWAP from late morning on. When all three are on the same side of VWAP, that’s the only side I want to trade. The VIX was up roughly 25% from its open. A fast intraday spike like that is a warning to size down or sit out, even when the VIX level itself looks moderate. Price stretched more than 1.5 ATR below VWAP. That’s the point where “it’s oversold, it has to bounce” starts to feel smart. On trend days it’s usually where the biggest losses come from. The lesson: on days like this, the losing trade isn’t the put. It’s buying the bounce, again and again. Each attempt looks reasonable on its own, and together they wreck the day. I built a free indicator, Discipline Suite, to put these checks on the chart where I can’t ignore them. It runs a checklist (opening window, VIX panic, direction vs VWAP, trend-day warning, late-day cutoff) and projects ATR-based stop and target levels. It doesn’t predict anything. It just tells you when not to trade. You can find it on my profile under Scripts. I’d welcome feedback from anyone who tries it. Educational content only, not financial advice.
