How to transition from free volunteer tutoring to paid private tutoring without sounding greedy?

Wait 5 sec.

Hey everyone, I’m a student currently involved in a leadership/community initiative project where a few of us volunteer to tutor lower-year students in math for free. It’s part of a school requirement/project managed by my peers. Recently, another junior approached me outside of the official project scope asking if I could tutor them one-on-one in math regularly. I checked with my peer who runs the project, and she confirmed that this extra student is totally outside our official scope, and whether I help him or not is entirely my personal choice. I actually want to help him, but since it's going to take up my personal free time outside of our official school initiative, I want to start charging a small, fair rate. The problem is: I’m super nervous about coming across as money-hungry or awkward, especially since my current tutoring through the project is free. How do I bring up the topic of payment to the student (or their parents) smoothly? How should I price myself as a student beginner? Any scripts or advice for setting boundaries so they understand the difference between the free school project and my personal private tutoring? Thanks in advance for any tips! submitted by /u/L3v11654 [link] [comments]
