He is emotionally unavailable and hung up on his ex. Should I stay or break up?

Wait 5 sec.

My partner and I (both mid-30s) have been together for two years following a six-month courtship. Before meeting me, he was in a seven-year relationship that ended when his ex cheated on him. He recently confessed he is still triggered by the breakup, and his therapist confirmed he hasn't forgiven himself for how things ended. Although we go through the motions of typical couple activities, he has been emotionally unavailable the whole time. While he insists he no longer loves his ex, doesn't want her back, and sees a future with me, he refuses to commit to marriage, remains emotionally disconnected during conflict, and fails to support me when I am at my lowest. I am exhausted from constantly explaining my feelings, adjusting to his emotional unavailability, and being the only one who initiates reconciliation when we fight. Now that I’ve set boundaries, he barely communicates. We have non-refundable international trips booked together over the next few months that I cannot afford to lose money on, so walking away immediately isn't a financial option. How should I interact with him day-to-day while waiting for these trips, and how can I emotionally detach to survive traveling together? Ultimately, should I cut my losses and break up with him, or is there any reason to stay? submitted by /u/Ill_Page_3012 to r/BreakUps [link] [comments]
