[Tragic trope] The villain genuinely COULD'VE turned out like the hero under better circumstances. (Spoilers for Pragmata and Metaphor: ReFantazio)

Slide 1: Copy X in Mega Man Zero Originally, X himself was going to be the antagonist of Mega Man Zero, having become a tyrant in the span between games. But at the last minute, they decided to change it into a replica of X instead. This honestly works way better than if X became a bad guy offscreen, as it plays into X's own backstory. In the intro of the first X game, it's stated that X had a literal century of testing done to ensure he had a defined sense of right and wrong, and he gets a further century of proper life experiences that help him develop and mature. Copy X is a perfect replication of X, both physically and in terms of abilities. However, he had no time to develop as a person before he had an impossibly huge legacy and responsibility put on his shoulders, had to constantly live in the original X's shadow, and was surrounded by enablers that sided with and supported him no matter what horrific things he did. So, instead of becoming a wise, compassionate leader like X, Copy X developed into an insecure, immature, and self-righteous tyrant desperate to prove himself better than his basis. Slide 2: Eight in Pragmata Both Diana and Eight were best friends prior to the story, essentially seeing each other as sisters. However, Diana wasn't able to fulfill the needs of Dr. Higgins as a test subject and had her memories erased before being put into storage. But that arguably was a blessing in disguise for Diana, as it allowed her to meet Hugh, someone that grew to genuinely love and care for her as a daughter and helped her develop in a somewhat healthy manner. By contrast, Eight wasn't as lucky. The only real connection she had was with Dr. Higgins, someone who already had conflicting feelings about the Pragmata and who was mentally coming apart at the seams due to the stress and grief he was feeling from his daughter's worsening health. So, when Higgins himself eventually dies due to Dead Filament exposure, Eight wildly misunderstands his last wish and plans to literally bombard Earth with Dead Filament meteors to "show the world" its danger. But not helping matters is the implication that Dead Filament actively exacerbates feelings of negativity in people infected by it, as shown by Diana during the trip through Experimental Pragmatics. So I think it's not just an inhuman AI misunderstanding a human, but Eight's own grief and anger over what happened to her "father" being made even worse. Slide 3: Louis in Metaphor: ReFantazio In Metaphor, our protagonist Will has a "fantasy novel" that's basically a hyper idealized version of our society. The world of the novel serves a major inspiration for Will and his desire to build a better world for everyone. But as he and his fairy companion Gallica are snooping through Louis's room on his airship, they find a copy of that novel. The two are confused as to why someone like him would have it. But later in the game, we find out the truth. It turns out that Louis is an Elda who read the book growing up, just like Will. And also like Will, he had his life irreversibly changed by Forden's actions, having lost his family and home in the same attack that killed Will's mother. This event, on top of being the scapegoat for the assassination attempt of the Prince/Will, led Louis to be totally embittered on the idea of a utopia, declaring it to be nothing but a foolish dream. Both Will and Louis desire to change Euchronia due to their own suffering. But whereas Will is motivated by the genuine hope of making the world a better place by breaking down divides and uniting people in service of a common goal, all Louis is motivated by is the misanthropic desire to tear down and destroy a world that hurt him so much, no matter how many people he has to trample to accomplish his goals. submitted by /u/fly_line22 to r/TopCharacterTropes [link] [comments]
