Nine years after journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia was murdered, those who knew her best are sharing personal memories of the woman behind the headlines, the investigations and the symbol she has become. On 16th October 2017, Daphne was killed in a car bomb attack near her home in Bidnija. Today, on the ninth anniversary of her murder, Lovin Malta is releasing a tribute video featuring five people who knew her personally, offering a glimpse into who she was beyond her public life. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Lovin Malta (@lovinmalta)This comes amid public concern following revelations about WhatsApp messages allegedly exchanged by jurors who acquitted Yorgen Fenech. Among the messages reported by Lovin Malta was one in which a juror allegedly wrote, “not even her children mourn her”, prompting further scrutiny of the attitudes expressed within the group. The revelations come as the legal process surrounding Daphne’s murder enters another stage. The Attorney General has appealed Fenech’s acquittal, seeking to challenge the outcome of the trial. Fenech was acquitted in September 2026 by a jury that voted eight to one in his favour. The appeal seeks to overturn that verdict, although the acquittal remains in place unless and until it is overturned through the legal process. The reported messages have also raised questions about potential bias during the trial and the conduct of those entrusted with deciding the case. While much of the public conversation surrounding Daphne continues to focus on her journalism, her murder and the pursuit of justice, this video takes a more personal approach: remembering the woman her family, friends and colleagues knew. The five interviewees each knew Daphne in a different capacity. Her sister, Corrine Vella, and niece, Amy Mallia, share the perspective of family. Prof. Clare Vassallo reflects on a friendship that began in childhood, while photographer and friend Daniel Cilia recalls the Daphne he knew personally. Fellow journalist Chris Peregin speaks about someone he looked up to and who helped inspire him to enter the profession.Together, their recollections paint a picture of Daphne beyond her work and public image. They reflect on Daphne’s personality beyond her public life, recalling her quirks, sense of humour, fondest memories and their last moments with her. While Daphne has become a symbol of press freedom, accountability and justice, the tribute seeks to remember the person behind that symbol: a sister, aunt, friend and colleague whose everyday life was shaped by the people closest to her.Nine years on, their stories offer a more intimate portrait of Daphne, preserving the personal memories that can often be lost amid the public debate surrounding her life and murder.Watch Lovin Malta’s video marking the ninth anniversary of Daphne Caruana Galizia’s murder on 16th October 2026.•
