It’s one thing if someone’s mental health is so bad that they’re incapable of holding a job while they receive treatment, and another thing entirely to choose not work because they want to focus on their mental health despite not having any means to support themselves. I have empathy for the former and don’t mind my tax or charitable dollars going towards supporting them while they get the help they need so that they can eventually work and safely be amongst society. I feel very differently towards the latter. I’m not okay with supporting someone just because they want to do it a certain way, especially when their way is counter to what’s recommended by the addiction/recovery community. Refraining from mild-altering substances like Valium and maintaining a low-stress job or volunteer position are considered vital aspects to recovery.
