Pope Leo XIV has been diagnosed with lung cancer after undergoing surgery in Rome, with the Vatican confirming that the operation was successful and there were no complications. The 71-year-old pontiff underwent a 90-minute operation at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on Tuesday, during which surgeons removed the lower lobe of his right lung.Tests subsequently confirmed that the growth was lung adenocarcinoma, a form of lung cancer. The nodule had initially been discovered during routine medical checks.“The operation was successful and there were no complications,” the Vatican said, adding that Pope Leo woke normally following the procedure and returned to his room after a brief period of observation. The Pope had revealed on Sunday that doctors had discovered a “contained” growth at a “very early stage” and recommended its removal. The entire lower lobe was removed in an effort to ensure the procedure was radical.Further tests are reportedly being carried out to determine whether there are any signs that the cancer has spread.Pope Leo is expected to remain in hospital for around a week, while his schedule has been cleared until 20th October to allow him to recover. The diagnosis comes ahead of a planned trip to Latin America in early November, including Peru, where Leo previously spent many years as a missionary and bishop.•
