I’m the oldest 30-year-old you will ever meet.”The surgery that will rule him out for the entirety of 2027 will be Zalatoris third back surgery in the last three years.Zalatoris was runner-up behind Matt Fitzpatrick at 2022 US OpenGettyZalatoris played four times on the PGA Tour in 2026Last year he had a disc replacement operation, two years on from microdiscectomy surgery.Having spent so long dealing with injury, Zalatoris is clearly just looking forward to being pain free and being able to get back out and compete.Zalatoris’ planned 2028 return will mean he comes back to a new look golfing circuit which is due to begin after the 2027 season.Despite his status as a former champion at the highest level, the 30-year-old is going to have to grind it out the hard way, with the second tier Challenger Series his starting point – a step below the PGA Tour Championship Series.“I’ve been in contact with the Tour, which has been great. It looks like I can come back in 2028 and play in the Challenger Series if everything works like it should.”Zalatoris boasts a remarkable record in the majors, having played in just 15 since being cut on his debut as an 21-year-old as the 2018 US Open.He has seven top 10 finishes, including three runners-up places at the 2021 Masters and then the 2022 PGA Championship and one month later at the US Open.
