It was inevitable. There appears to be tension brewing between Joe Buck and Troy Aikman. Buck and Aikman have been inseparable for 25 years but tensions have grown of lateGettyThis has even led to speculation that the 25-year booth partners of Monday Night Football could soon be no longer. According to a report from Front Office Sports’ Ryan Glasspiegel, this friction in their relationship primarily stems from Buck reaching a new six-year deal with ESPN worth $108 million back in September. Meanwhile, Aikman’s future is in limbo with his current contract due to expire after the 2027 Super Bowl, which also so happens to be the network’s first. Glasspiegel also reported that before the enthralling encounter between the Buffalo Bills and Los Angeles Rams on Monday night, Buck allegedly “broke the ice” on this tension, but this wound up developing into an argument. Their chemistry in the booth, appeared fine with the pair in great form during the overtime shootout. However, with ESPN’s seeming reluctance to extend Aikman past 2027 – at least as it stands now – this appears to suggest that they could be looking to replace the three-time Super Bowl champion going forward. Buck wants to stay partners with Aikman Buck and Aikman are synonymous with each other on the broadcasting circuit, and so breaking up that partnership seems unthinkable. But Buck has previously made it clear that he wouldn’t want to work with anyone else. “I’m pretty well on record, having begged out of my last years at Fox to follow him to ESPN, where I stand on all that,” Buck said in a September interview with 97.5 The Fanatic.“I legitimately love the guy like a brother. We’re basically the same age; I’m 57, he’s 59. We’ve both been through divorce. We’re both girl dads. Tensions have boiled between the longtime booth partners, which led to an argumentGettyBuck has lobbied for Aikman’s contract extension stalemate to endGetty“Twenty-five years, you’re sharing a lot of life together. Forget games and in the booth and all that stuff. So, I hope so. I mean, both of us were up. It wasn’t like we were doing some national signing day where we walk in arm-in-arm and then sign contracts at the same time.“We’ve always kind of kept that stuff separate. I’m obviously hopeful, to say the least, that something gets done,” Buck continued.“But that’s kind of his world, and ESPN’s world, and I’ve got to kind of mind my own yard in that stuff. I think that’s the best way to be.”Should things not work out with ESPN, though, then there is a chance that CBS could be eyeing up the 59-year-old for a role in their top announcer booth. Of course, the rival network recently parted ways with Tony Romo following his arrest for OWI, with J.J. Watt having stepped in alongside Jim Nantz on the No. 1 team. Fox’s Greg Olsen will be out of contract at the end of the 2027 season, and likely in line for a lead role, while Jason Kelce is stepping up his ESPN role. And there is the likelihood that Travis Kelce enters the mix, with the current season fully expected to be his last on the field – but the off field merry-go-round may just be about to heat up.
