Arsenal made a surprise move to lure Mauricio Pochettino following his exit from Tottenham in 2019, hoping to replicate the success Spurs had enjoyed under the Argentine. The gap between Tottenham Hotspur and their bitter rivals Arsenal has widened in recent seasons, with the Gunners more often than not finishing ahead of Spurs in the Premier League table. In fact, the last time Tottenham ended above Arsenal was in the 2021/22 season, when Spurs beat Mikel Arteta’s side to fourth place, finishing on 71 points compared to Arsenal’s 69.However, it has not always been this way. Under Mauricio Pochettino, Tottenham were by far the more successful of the two sides. The Argentine guided Spurs to a Premier League title challenge, a Champions League final, and finished above Arsenal three times during his tenure. It is no surprise then that Pochettino is still held in high regard by many Tottenham fans, having given them memories they will never forget.RankCoachPoints/mPointsMWDLGGC1Tim Sherwood1.914222133640302Mauricio Pochettino1.8938220211343463722063Antonio Conte1.881055632915112644Andre Villas-Boas1.83995429121381675Harry Redknapp1.742501447137362281616Jose Mourinho1.64955827141797677Ryan Mason1.58191261526208Martin Jol1.511711134730361681469Nuno Espirito Santo1.50151050591610Ray Clemence1.405942161115606611Gerry Francis1.3916511943364015014212Ange Postecoglou1.371047631113413812613George Graham1.311289833293612912314David Pleat1.29493814717515515Glenn Hoddle1.281148932183911614116Christian Gross1.2634279711354117Jacques Santini1.1813113446818Osvaldo Ardiles1.156254161424758319Juande Ramos1.144136101115545220Thomas Frank1.1229267811363722Cristian Stellini1.004411261123Igor Tudor0.2015014413Photo by Ben STANSALL / AFP via Getty ImagesArsenal considered Mauricio Pochettino after Spurs sackingReports from Telegraph Sport claim that there was a chance of Pochettino making a shock switch from Tottenham to Arsenal after he was sacked by Spurs.Pochettino’s time in North London ended during the 2019/20 season, and at that point Arsenal were searching for a new manager to replace Unai Emery. The publication explains that Pochettino was among those considered by Arsenal, with talks even held between the former Spurs boss and technical director Edu Gaspar.Numerous sources have suggested that Pochettino showed a willingness to engage with Arsenal over the possibility of replacing Emery.Pochettino’s stance about managing Arsenal made clearWhile players have occasionally crossed the north London divide, managers rarely have. In fact, only two men have managed both Arsenal and Tottenham:Terry Neill – Managed Spurs from 1974 to 1976 before taking charge of Arsenal from 1976 to 1983.George Graham – Managed Arsenal from 1986 to 1995 before later managing Spurs from 1998 to 2001.Pochettino, however, was not willing to become the third. The Argentine made his stance clear back in 2018. When asked about the possibility of joining Arsenal following Emery’s dismissal, he said, as relayed by Standard Sport:“I am never going to be manager of Barcelona or Arsenal because I am so identified with Tottenham and Espanyol. I grew up in Newell’s Old Boys and will never manage Rosario Central. That is my decision because I prefer to work on my farm in Argentina than in some places. “But my commitment is massive in this club. I am working like I am going to be here forever. But in the end, it is like the players, you never know what is going to happen in football. It is a lot of rumours about this, about that.”READ MORE: Roberto De Zerbi wants Piero Ausilio as Tottenham’s new Sporting Director in JanuaryThe post Arsenal tried to tempt Mauricio Pochettino to betray Tottenham despite firm 2018 ‘no’ appeared first on Spurs Web.
