Bitcoin trades in a neutral technical territory as the buyers and sellers continue to resolve their battle

Wait 5 sec.

Bitcoin made a run higher today, but the buyers have some work to do.After moving above both its 100- and 200-hour moving averages and reaching $83,075, the price has rotated back between those technical levels. That puts the short-term bias back in neutral territory, with traders waiting for the next shove.Last week’s rebound stalled below the moving averagesLast week, bitcoin moved higher and found resistance near $84,178. A ceiling was developed at that area, before rotating lower. The decline took the price below its 100- and 200-hour moving averages—the blue and green lines on the chart below—and into the swing area between $80,106 and $81,183.Thursday’s low briefly broke below that area, but the sellers could not sustain the momentum. The price snapped back toward the falling moving averages, although it remained below both through the weekend. The sellers had their shot below support and missed. However, the buyers still needed to get above the moving averages to increase their control.Today’s break higher loses momentumThat break came today. Bitcoin pushed above:The 100-hour moving average at $81,748.The 200-hour moving average at $82,279.The move extended to $83,075, with the rebound in stocks potentially helping the risk-on tone. However, the early North American session has seen the price rotate back below the 200-hour moving average and into the gap between the two.The buyers had their shot above both moving averages, but could not keep the momentum going. Neither side has firm control at the moment. What would tilt the bias?On the downside, a break below the 100-hour moving average at $81,748 would tilt the bias back toward the sellers. The next target would be the $80,106–$81,183 swing area. Getting below—and staying below—that area would open the door for further downside momentum. On the upside, buyers need to reclaim the 200-hour moving average at $82,279 and stay above it. That would put today’s high at $83,075 back in play, followed by last week’s high near $84,178. Above that, the higher swing area between $85,578 and $87,374 becomes the next target. For now, the immediate battle is between the moving averages. A sustained break outside those levels would give traders a directional bias and a nearby level to define risk. The broader range going back to mid-September remains in place. Getting out of that range is the bigger challenge. First, traders need to resolve the closer battle. In the video above, I take a look at the levels that will help define the next move.
