This summer, Walt Disney World finally gave guests a much clearer picture of what awaits beyond Magic Kingdom’s fairytale facades, with Walt Disney Imagineering revealing new details about its long-awaited villains expansion.Credit: DisneyDuring the Disney Experiences showcase, Horizons: A Carousel of Progress, at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, Imagineering President and Chief Creative Officer Bruce Vaughn and Executive Creative Director Caroline May confirmed the land’s name, introduced its original storyline, and shared the first real look at its two headline attractions.Villains Land Is Officially ConfirmedFirst announced at D23 in 2024, the expansion will officially be called Villains Land. The name follows Magic Kingdom’s long-standing tradition set by Fantasyland and Tomorrowland, though the atmosphere will be far more sinister than anything currently found in the park.Disney also compared the land’s overall scale to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, signaling a substantial addition rather than a modest themed corner. Dining, shopping, and additional experiences are also planned.Recent Imagery Shows Sheer Scale of OverhaulA new image from photographer Bioreconstruct captures the sheer scope of this Magic Kingdom overhaul, which also includes the reimagining of the Rivers of America with the Cars franchise-inspired area, Piston Peak National Park.Aerial overview of construction of Villains Land and Piston Peak National Park.Aerial overview of construction of Villains Land and Piston Peak National Park. pic.twitter.com/OP3tNN4HPY— bioreconstruct (@bioreconstruct) October 19, 2026A Corrupted Wishing Well Sets the StageRather than recreating scenes from classic films, Villains Land will tell an original story inspired by Walt Disney Animation Studios’ characters. Guests will enter a foreboding forest and discover a ruined Wishing Well, corrupted by an unknown individual who made an evil wish. Its poisoned magic has since spread through the forest, drawing Disney’s villains to claim what remains and build their own lairs, from imposing fortresses to elaborate palaces.Maleficent’s Coaster Leads the ChargeThe first headline attraction is a roller coaster centered on Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty (1959). Riders will accept her invitation and race through enchanted briars surrounding her mountaintop fortress. Imagineering teased that the coaster will include elements the team has never attempted on similar attractions. The ride’s name, track layout, technical specifications, and opening date have not yet been revealed. The Magic Mirror Hosts a Villain-Filled Dark RideThe second attraction is a dark ride hosted by the Magic Mirror. Guests will begin in the catacombs beneath the Evil Queen’s palace before being transported into the mystical Mirror Realm, where they will encounter a lineup of villains. Disney plans to blend special effects with physical sets, though the full roster of characters and ride system details remains under wraps.Credit: DisneyVillains Land has moved well beyond concept, with a defined story, two distinct attractions, and an ambitious footprint. Thrill-seekers will want to keep an eye on Maleficent’s coaster, while fans of immersive storytelling may find the Magic Mirror dark ride the bigger draw. Opening dates and ride names have not yet been announced, but Disney has confirmed more details will follow. How much are you looking forward to the arrival of Villains Land?
