A closed security checkpoint is a small thing until it’s the one you were counting on. This week, posts about the Disneyland Resort described a Downtown Disney checkpoint that was closed, guests being redirected, and a longer walk for anyone coming from parking. Meanwhile, new details have emerged about an earlier event, when two suspicious bags were found outside the resort.Credit: DisneyIt’s natural to wonder whether the two are connected. We’re going to keep each claim tied to its source, say plainly what hasn’t been established, and avoid drawing a line between events that the reporting doesn’t connect. Here’s what’s been posted, what’s been reported, and what visitors should keep in mind. What Matt Desmond PostedCredit: DisneyMatt Desmond (@DisneyScoopGuy) posted on X:The Downtown Disney security checkpoint closest to the Pixar Pals Parking Structure is still closed but they’re also blocking access to the Disneyland Hotel security entrance and making everyone walk to the one closest to the Pixar Place HotelThe Downtown Disney security checkpoint closest to the Pixar Pals Parking Structure is still closed but they’re also blocking access to the Disneyland Hotel security entrance and making everyone walk to the one closest to the Pixar Place Hotel https://t.co/oen18w5vj8— Matt Desmond (@DisneyScoopGuy) October 18, 2026On October 16, he posted:The Downtown Disney security checkpoint is closed and they are redirecting guests to the Disneyland Hotel security entrance. In the first, access to it is blocked and everyone is walking to the entrance closest to the Pixar Place Hotel. In the second, guests are being redirected to it.The first post isn’t dated in the information we have, so we can’t say which came first or whether they describe the same moment. We’re presenting each as posted and not reconciling them. The statement that security expects the checkpoint to be closed all day is Desmond’s account of what security told him. What the Posts Don’t SayNeither post says why the Downtown Disney checkpoint is closed. They also don’t link the closure to the events of October 12, and the information we have doesn’t either. We aren’t suggesting a connection. The October 12 Packages, as ReportedOn Monday night, October 12, 2026, two suspicious bags found outside the Disneyland Resort near the Harbor Boulevard shuttle area prompted a bomb squad response, temporarily closed a major guest access area, and led to a police investigation. Authorities ultimately discovered no explosives. Guests were redirected away from the eastern entrance while officers secured the area.According to the Los Angeles Times, Disneyland security contacted the Anaheim Police Department at about 9:50 p.m. after employees discovered two unattended bags near a roundabout outside the resort’s main entrance.Earlier reporting, citing the Anaheim Police Department through NBC4 Los Angeles, described a suspicious device found near the Esplanade area by the shuttle drop-off at Harbor Boulevard. The reports use different words, and the information we have doesn’t spell out how they relate. What Was in the BagsThe Los Angeles Times reported that one satchel-style bag rested on a dolly with exposed wires protruding from it. Investigators also found marbles inside it. A second nylon bag had been sealed with duct tape and contained objects with sharp edges.Additional reporting identified some of the objects as Disney-themed crowns and other miscellaneous metal accessories. The items were ultimately harmless, but their unusual appearance led authorities to treat the situation as a potential security threat. The Orange County Sheriff’s Department bomb squad examined the packages and determined shortly before midnight that neither contained explosives. The reporting says the affected area subsequently reopened. The InvestigationAccording to the Los Angeles Times, Anaheim police Sgt. Eric Anderson said investigators believe someone intentionally left the packages to look suspicious. Authorities are trying to identify the person responsible, and a motive has not been established.Reports from KTLA, republished by AOL, indicate investigators are searching for a man connected to the incident, and that surveillance footage and witness accounts reportedly provided information. As of the latest reporting, police had not publicly released his identity or photographs. That distinction matters. Investigators suspect deliberate staging, but authorities have not established that the incident was an organized hoax, publicly identified a perpetrator, or announced criminal charges. The report also notes a separate Disneyland police response involving false shooting reports earlier in 2026, and says there’s no verified evidence connecting the two incidents.Where It Happened and Who Was AffectedCredit: Josh Hallett, FlickrAccording to NBC Los Angeles, the bags were found near the shuttle drop-off area adjoining the Esplanade, the central pedestrian plaza connecting the resort’s two theme parks. Police restricted access to the affected eastern corridor, and visitors used alternative exits while bomb technicians investigated. The report says the disruption particularly affected guests traveling toward Harbor Boulevard hotels and the Toy Story Parking Area, which normally relies on shuttle transportation serving the resort’s eastern entrance. It also says the incident did not constitute a confirmed evacuation of both theme parks, and that the restrictions centered on the Esplanade and surrounding access routes rather than a resort-wide shutdown.Security Measures and Construction ContextAccording to Disneyland’s official security information, as cited in the report, measures include security personnel, trained dogs, bag inspections, and screening checkpoints throughout the property. The park’s published rules also reserve the right to inspect bags and address unattended belongings. The report adds that the October 12 response was unrelated to a project to reconfigure the Toy Story shuttle operations and transportation infrastructure, and that recent demolition work around the Esplanade is part of broader plans to improve pedestrian access. It says there is no evidence the construction contributed to the suspicious packages.Planning Your WalkFor guests visiting the Disneyland Resort, the practical point from Desmond’s posts is straightforward: if you’re walking over from parking and the Downtown Disney checkpoint is closed, your walk may be longer. Leave extra time, follow the directions of security and Cast Members, and check official channels before you go.That’s general advice, not a statement about why the checkpoint is closed. We don’t have that information.Over to YouHave you walked through the Disneyland Resort’s security checkpoints this week?
