Japanese Horse of the Year Forever Young (Jpn) (Real Steel {Jpn}) posted a half-mile breeze Sunday morning at Belmont Park in his final New York move before shipping down to Keeneland for the World Championships. The international globetrotting star was clocked in :49.65 (50/59) with assistant trainer, and regular exercise rider, Yuki Araki in the irons. After backing up clockwise to the backside, the stallion was caught by NYRA clockers working an opening quarter-mile in 25 and 3/5 seconds, a half-mile in 49 and 3/5, and galloped out five furlongs in 1:02 3/5. Araki commented that he was please with Forever Young coming through the lane a touch straighter than he did last Sunday.“Solid–compared to last time we breezed, on the straight he slightly [drifted out], but today, he had more straightness,” Araki said. “He improved and mentally, he is really going forward, which is positive.”“We needed a good breeze out today–we kind of mixed it up American style. I asked him from the five-furlong post, but I didn't have to ask him too much. He knew he was breezing today and picked it up well. Lovely traveling and cruising. I'm very satisfied.”The assistant trainer said Forever Young would have an easy Monday before shipping out for Kentucky on Tuesday.Phileas Fogg Posts Sharp Breeze Ahead of Classic TiltGustavo Rodriguez-trainee Phileas Fogg (Astern {Aus}) also went out Sunday morning to post what his trainer described as something of an unintentionally sharp breeze amidst an ongoing foot issue.Breezing five furlongs alone with Kendrick Carmouche in the irons, the gelding went in a bullet :57 flat before galloping out six furlongs in 1:09 2/5s. It was his third local effort following his five-panel move in 1:00.60 last Sunday.“He breezed extremely fast,” Rodriguez said. “We weren't looking for that kind of work. He worked too fast. I think the track is fast, but he still worked faster than what we wanted.”“Last breeze, he breezed good and everything, but he was a little bit 'ouchy' with the left [front] foot. I said to Kendrick, 'I think we've got him good again.' We put the glue-on [shoes] on him. I [told him], 'Listen, if [Phileas Fogg] feels good, I don't want him to go smoking, but I don't want him to go slow either. If he feels good to you, let him breeze good.' He's never breezed like that before.”Rodriguez said he suspected that his stable star might have stepped on a rock or a shoe on the track last time, but also added that the foot issue would remain under observation.“We've been checking him every day.”Scottish Lassie Tunes Up for DistaffMGISW Scottish Lassie (McKinzie) was also out at Belmont Sunday morning to record her latest breeze as preparations for her tilt in the Distaff continued. The 4-year-old cruised a half-mile in :47.40 (11/59) on the main track with Edgard Zayas aboard. Trainer Jorge Abreu was pleased with the move.“She breezed pretty good and smooth to me,” Abreu said. “She had a really nice breeze: 47 and two, out in 59 and change. She was on the outside, with [MSW & MGSP] Nelson Avenue [by Into Mischief] on the inside. Nelson Avenue is a good work horse. I didn't want somebody to overdo it, and she is also a good work horse, so they've been breezing pretty evenly. Before all her races, I've been trying to use him as a workmate for her.”Scottish Lassie is due to ship out for Keeneland later on Sunday and will have one more work next week at Keeneland with Luis Saez aboard, who has the mount in the Distaff.“She'll have a final breeze with Luis over there on Sunday next week.”The post Breeders’ Cup Preps: Forever Young Breezes at Belmont, Contenders Hit the Track appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions.
