Looking for a horse / animal volunteer role for my 77-year-old mom in the StL area

Greetings, St. Louisans! I’m reaching out for suggestions for volunteer opportunities in St. Louis for my mom. My dad (her husband) passed away a few weeks ago and I’m worried that she’s going to be lonely and distraught without some productive way to spend her time. She loves horses. They’re the best part of her life. If she could find a gig just doing basic caretaker work for horses (whether a private individual’s horse, a community organization that maintains stables, etc.), she would find that very fulfilling and meaningful. She also has been a longtime caretaker of dogs and cats and would be eager to help with them, too. Some basic points: - Thanks to a recent knee surgery and treatment for a breathing problem, her mobility is the best it has been in years, and she’s eager to move around outside (she keeps a lovely garden in her condo complex, for example). That said, she has some neck/back problems, so probably won’t be doing a lot of (say) shoveling the stables. She also cannot ride herself. - She grew up caretaking for horses and owned her own for about 15 years, so has lots of experience. - She lives in South County. While she drives, it’s best she not travel long distances (she’s not great with the highway). Some family members could give her rides further out if she had a regular schedule, though it’d require some planning and coordination. For purposes of this thread, I’m just looking for tips for people she might contact or community organizations who could use some help. Even if it’s just coming out to brush some manes and do some feeding 1-3 times a week, it’d be wonderful for her. You can also DM me suggestions. Thank you, all! submitted by /u/darth_snuggs to r/StLouis [link] [comments]
