I brought Vision Pro's "flip your palm" gesture to Apple Watch. Here's what worked and what didn't

Wait 5 sec.

After using Vision Pro for a while, I developed the habit of flipping my palm to check the time, even when I wasn't wearing the headset. Also, since the ticket gates in Japan have the scanner on the right side, I'd been thinking about wearing my Apple Watch on my right wrist. SpatialCue, a free, open-source Apple Watch and iPhone app, came out of those two ideas. Features: - Turn your palm up and look at it → a light vibration - Flip it back over → the time as a Taptic Time-style vibration. Voice is also available (via iPhone, headphones, or the Watch speaker) - Double Tap → play/pause. Flick your wrist → skip forward/back. Digital Crown → volume What worked: - A simple state machine that detects "palm up" and "flipped back over" from the Watch's orientation relative to gravity. It works with just 50 readings per second, which made a Low Power Mode possible. - Relying on Apple's own Double Tap to detect the "pinch". It's far more reliable than anything I could have built myself. What didn't work: - Detecting a finger pinch from wrist movement alone. It reacted even when I simply opened my hand. It's now an experimental feature, off by default. - Using AirPods head tracking to check whether you're looking at your palm. It didn't actually improve accuracy, so it's optional now. - Watch haptics can't be freely customized (watchOS has no Core Haptics), so I built the Taptic Time-style patterns by stringing together the same standard vibration. To make it easier to try: - I've submitted the first version for TestFlight review. Since it uses Double Tap, it needs an Apple Watch Series 9 / Ultra 2 or later (watchOS 11 or later). I'm also working on supporting more models. - If you build it yourself, ./Tools/install.sh builds and installs the app on both your iPhone and Watch in one step. With a free Apple ID, it can re-sign automatically every week. Video: Vision Pro on top, SpatialCue below. I'd especially love to hear what else you'd want the palm flip to do. submitted by /u/Other_Train9419 [link] [comments]
