Troy Deeney has offered his services to Watford on an advisory basis as they face the prospect of another managerial change. The Hornets sit 22nd in the Championship with only two wins from ten following their 5-1 thrashing by Cardiff City on Tuesday night.Dionisi joined Watford in June, but has overseen just two league wins and faces an uncertain future at the clubGettytalkSPORT understands that head coach Alessio Dionisi will remain in charge for their home clash against Charlton Athletic on Saturday.Furthermore, the Watford owners have acknowledged their hastiness with managerial changes and believe Dionisi is owed more time.Since the Pozzo family took over the club in 2012, they have had 24 different managers on the touchline, including caretakers.Watford were a Premier League club as recently as 2022 but look set for a lengthy absence from the top flight as things stand. But Deeney, a club legend who scored 140 goals in all competitions from 2010 to 2021, wants to help change their current trajectory.Deeney puts himself out there for WatfordWhen asked on talkSPORT if he would be willing to go back, he said: “I’ve been asked this question a lot, and I’ve not really given the true answer because I thought it makes it about myself. But, they’ve always had my number for the last five years.“Even when I was angry, even when I was frustrated at the way that we parted. I thought after 13 years of service, given a very successful period of time, they least they could do was tell me at the start of the window, ‘You’re not for us’, shake hands and let me go. “Not with three days left to go, ‘Oh, by the way, we want you out; here’s a payoff’. I thought I deserved a little bit more credit than that.“I nearly went back in 2021; they said… ‘You’re a bit too old for us, we’re going younger’, so they signed Jake Livermore, who’s two years younger than me.“‘We need characters, but we want to make a pathway for the young players to come through’, so they signed Moussa Sissoko, Tom Ince. So, again, that’s a personal thing, whatever. But if they ever need me, I’m a phone call away.”Deeney, who scored a record 47 Premier League goals for Watford, wants to help his former club amid a bleak periodGetty ImagesDeeney then sent a message to the owners when he added: “They don’t (call), and do you know why they don’t? Because I’ll tell them the truth, and the truth is you’ve lost who you are. “When you came in… I want this bit to be very clear as well: they gave us an unbelievable saving grace; they saved Watford not too long ago.“Watford only had three stands, if you remember, when we had the (2012/13) play-off moment, the Leicester moment. There was only three stands, they put another stand in, they’ve spent loads of money, they’ve had successful times, I don’t want that to be lost. “But over the last five to six years, you’ve lost your way, and you’ve not acknowledged that you’ve lost your way. “That’s why it keeps going this way, and people like myself, Luther Blissett, John Barnes, Tommy Mooney, whoever you want to get involved, get somebody in who genuinely cares about the club, doesn’t need the money.“I don’t need their money, I just want to see it done right for the next generation, that’s all.”Deeney recognised the positives of the Watford ownership, but believes the club are on a downward spiralGettyDeeney then spoke on what he thinks Watford need to do in order to save themselves from further misery.“First, acknowledgement as to where you are,” he explained. “If you look at all of the communications coming out from the club, they’re talking about play-offs – you’re getting spanked 5-1 by Cardiff, it should have been 9-1, by the way. “Acknowledgement of where you are, acknowledgement that you’ve lost your identity, your way, shape. Survive, first and foremost, and then actually start spending some money. “Everybody in that room and myself love Michail Antonio – he hasn’t been playing the last couple of years since his tragic accident (car crash in December 2024), for a reason. “But he’s at Watford; Watford took him on – what does that say about their recruitment? Respectfully to Michail, and it’s not about Michail; it’s a lot deeper than that. But you’re trying to stay up this year with Michail Antonio helping the ship; that doesn’t work.“The other piece to it, when I look back… I’ve spoken to a few of the lads, so they won’t mind me saying it, but lads that weren’t even able to play when we were there are now running the show.“So either one of two things happened – they’ve got exponentially better over five years, or the level has gone really low. I’ll let you decide.”
