The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, has expressed optimism that the emergency waste evacuation exercise at the IRECOP site will be completed within the next one to two months.During an inspection of the site on Friday, October 16, 2026, the Minister observed significant progress, with accumulated waste heaps substantially reduced and some sections almost completely cleared. He commended the operators, drivers, supervisors and district coordinators for their dedication and commitment to the National Emergency Waste Evacuation Exercise.Mr Ayariga said the next phase would involve reclaiming the land and dredging the adjoining river to restore the free flow of water. He also renewed the government’s appeal to corporate institutions and private sector organisations to support the exercise, particularly the planned dredging works, which will require substantial financial and logistical resources. The exercise forms part of efforts to address accumulated waste and improve environmental sanitation at the site.
