What did you do for work while your nursing license was suspended? Feeling defeated

Wait 5 sec.

What do you all do for work when the Board of Nursing suspends your license for a year? I’m going through this right now, and I’m honestly feeling sad, depressed, and overwhelmed. I graduated from LPN school in April 2024. In June 2025, a little over a year into working as an LPN, I had an incident involving a missed medication dose. There were also documentation errors after my job implemented a new charting system. Other nurses were having the same documentation issues with the new system too. The facility said I had seven documentation write-ups, but I was only aware of three. At the time, I was working as an LPN while attending RN school. I was stressed about an exam I had that day and was studying during my shift because I wanted to pass. I know I should not have been studying while working, and the medication should have been given. I take responsibility for missing that dose. But I don’t believe this makes me a bad nurse. I have never stolen medication or gone to work under the influence. I made mistakes during a stressful time, and I wish there had been more consideration of the circumstances and an opportunity to improve. I had already given my two weeks’ notice, and the facility was understaffed. According to what my manager told me, “If you weren’t leaving us, we wouldn’t even write you up.” That is why I believe my resignation played a role in how this was handled. Hearing that made this even harder to accept. Since then, I’ve finished RN school and passed my RN NCLEX in February 2026. I had a NICU job lined up and was so excited to start. Instead, I’ve spent months dealing with the Board and lawyers, trying to fight this. Now I’m in the process of receiving a two-year suspension: one year active and the other year stayed. My understanding is that I’ll have probation conditions and can later reapply to be considered for my RN license. I know my mistakes matter, but the punishment feels harsh, and I’ve felt unheard throughout this process. I worked so hard to finish school and pass my boards, and now everything feels like it’s on hold. Has anyone here been through a suspension? What did you do for income during that time? Were you able to return to nursing afterward, and how did you cope emotionally? I have two kids to provide for, and I’m trying to figure out my next steps. I’m feeling really defeated and would appreciate practical advice and experiences from people who have been through something similar. submitted by /u/Prestigious-Arm-8481 [link] [comments]
