I volunteered with a woman who was rejected for a job as a children’s librarian because she struggled with adults and general chaos. Children’s librarians are cat herders and we deal with adults constantly. We all had shifts at the reference desk, and parents needed as much love and reassurance as their children. It was very clear she couldn’t handle that aspect of the job. We all shared an office too, and that would have been too much. Ultimately I got the job, and she ended up teaching preschool at a church. Yes, there is plenty of chaos in a preschool classroom too (ask me how I know), but she is wonderful with children when she is in control of the situation. It’s the right fit for her. Sometimes people are terrible in one setting and great in another.
