Tanner McKee ‘confident’ in Eagles offense amid Jalen Hurts fears and withering playoff verdict

The Philadelphia Eagles enter their Week 6 matchup against the Carolina Panthers without quarterback Jalen Hurts.Hurts was ruled out of Sunday’s clash after the team announced they had discovered a blood clot in his leg.The Eagles released a statement upon the new breaking that Hurts was ruled outGettyHurts played the entirety of their crushing London loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday. The clot is thought to have been a result of a blow to his calf-area during their Week 4 loss to the Los Angeles Rams.An ultrasound on Wednesday revealed “movement in the small blood clot,” and Hurts has now been ruled out.At 2-3 on the year, the Eagles are hoping to climb out of their three-game losing streak against the Panthers. In his place Stanford product Tanner McKee will make the third-start of his career, and he is confident he can pick up for his teammate.“As a backup quarterback, that’s the mindset you have to have. At any moment, you have to be ready to play on a Sunday,” McKee told reporters.“It’s kind of a luxury for me to have the ‘1’ (starter) reps in practice and just running the meetings or whatever it is. It’s kind of a luxury for me as a backup to have a week to prepare like that.“I felt I was ready at any moment these last few weeks, so nothing changes from that standpoint. “My level of confidence in the offense has been great, it’s been growing. “It’s been nice to get the extra reps and also have conversations with Sean [Mannion] about what he likes, what I like, and how we like to attack the Panthers.”McKee began the season as the third-string quarterback for the EaglesGettyMcKee threw for 5,336 yards and 28 touchdowns in two seasons at StanfordGettyMcKee was a sixth-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft and has impressed in limited action.Through his six appearances, the 26-year-old has thrown for 597 yards, with five touchdowns and one interception.Eagles hit with harsh assessment on playoff chancesOne of the biggest concerns is the Eagles’ inability to consistently close out games. They led with eight-seconds to go in London against the Jaguars, and allowed the Rams to score 14 unanswered points in the fourth quarter the week prior. It’s clear to see that ESPN’s NFL insider Dan Graziano is seeing warning signs for a team who have championship aspirations.“If the Eagles keep struggling with these injury issues, and their offensive line continues to look like a shadow of its dominant 2024 self,” Graziano wrote.Hurts’ injury couldn’t have come at a worse time for the EaglesGetty“They could be the third-best team in their own division. And it would be tough to make the playoffs from that spot.”Between an offensive line failing to replicate its past dominance without Lane Johnson, late-game defensive collapses, and a mounting injury list capped by Hurts’ diagnosis, the margins for error have evaporated.Join talkSPORT’s dedicated US Sports YouTube channel The S* Word every Tuesday and Thursday for our brand new NFL shows. On Tuesdays, Will Gavin and US senior reporter Brian T.
