A police officer was injured at De Grolsch Veste on Thursday evening following a serious incident involving an FC Thun supporter. According to police, the officer was kicked and punched in the head, lost his balance and subsequently fell down a flight of stairs. The incident took place ahead of the Conference League match between FC Twente and FC Thun. According to police, a group of supporters of the Swiss club refused to comply with instructions to move to the designated away section of the stadium. Officers then used force to move the group towards the section, but this did not immediately have the desired effect, according to police. Things then went wrong on a staircase leading to the away section. An FC Thun supporter allegedly kicked and punched a police officer in the head. The officer consequently lost his balance, fell down the stairs and was injured. Police have not disclosed the severity of the officer’s injuries. After the match, a 20-year-old man was arrested. His place of residence is currently unknown. He is suspected of assaulting the officer. Unrest The disturbances inside the stadium followed an afternoon in Enschede city centre that began peacefully but gradually became more tense. FC Thun supporters had initially been allowed to move freely around the city, but were later escorted away from the Oude Markt and taken to Wilminkplein under a substantial police escort. The Swiss supporters were subsequently escorted to the stadium by police as well. According to police, “potential risks to public order” had arisen. By that point, the mayor had already prepared an emergency order. According to police, it was ultimately not put into effect. submitted by /u/bertjedevries [link] [comments]
