Yesterday, I did a post-on gold sellers on the back of news Kazakhstan was selling some of the reserves. I spoke cautiously in regard to the move given the semi-holiday trading, but acknowledged that the precious metal was testing a key target near the 100 and 200 hour moving averages and that the area would help define the next move. See the post and the video HEREGold buyers ended up defending the important technical area. The price has bounced higher in trading here today but those buyers still have work to do before claiming more control. The pullback tested the 100-hour and 200-hour moving averages (blue and green lines on the chart below), where willing buyers helped stall the decline. The price has since bounced above those levels and is trading near $4,184 in the supplied chart. That is good news for the buyers. The next challenge is getting above and staying above the resistance overhead.Hourly moving averages define the riskThe two hourly moving averages are nearly on top of each other:100-hour moving average: $4,157.82200-hour moving average: $4,157.78That makes the area near $4,158 the immediate support barometer. Stay above, and buyers keep the recovery alive. It also gives traders a level where risk can be defined and limited.Move below and stay below, however, and the support defense loses its significance. Sellers would regain more control, with attention turning back toward the recent lows.Buyers still face an important ceilingOn the topside, the next key hurdle is the swing area between $4,223.51 and $4,237.55. That area has acted as both support and resistance on a number of occasions going back to June. The 61.8% retracement at $4,229.43 sits inside that zone, adding another technical reason to pay attention when the price gets there.Buyers have defended support, but they have not broken the ceiling. Getting above and staying above the swing area would be a more meaningful step toward stronger upside control.Just above that zone is the 100-day moving average at $4,252.80. Buyers need to clear that level as well to strengthen the broader recovery. If they succeed, the next target would be the 50% retracement at $4,318.18.Conversely, if sellers lean against those resistance levels and the price rotates lower, the rally would remain a recovery within the larger decline from the late-August high.Trading education: Holding support is step oneThis setup illustrates why traders should separate a successful support test from a confirmed change in the broader bias.Holding the hourly moving averages tells us buyers are willing to defend that area. It does not automatically tell us they can overcome the sellers waiting above. The sequence is straightforward:Hold above the hourly moving averages to preserve the recovery.Clear the swing area to overcome a repeatedly tested ceiling.Get above and stay above the 100-day moving average to strengthen the bullish bias.A brief move through resistance is only the first step. If the price cannot stay above it, sellers have a reason to lean against the level again. The follow-through matters. For now, support near $4,158 keeps buyers in the near-term battle, while $4,223.51–$4,237.55 and $4,252.80 remain the upside hurdles. The price action will provide the next clue. This article was written by Greg Michalowski at investinglive.com.
