'Verbally we agreed' - Shakhtar Donetsk expect compensation from Tottenham Hotspur

Wait 5 sec.

Shakhtar Donetsk chief executive Sergei Palkin has revealed what Tottenham Hotspur verbally agreed regarding Manor Solomon, who left the Lilywhites to join West Ham in the summer.Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, a FIFA ruling allowed foreign players at clubs in both countries to suspend their contracts immediately.Spurs were thus able to secure Solomon on a free transfer in the summer of 2023, even though the Ukrainian club had spent £5.5m to sign him from Maccabi Petah Tikva in January 2019.The winger only played six times for Tottenham across his three-year spell at the club, partly down to his injury issues, with the Israeli international sealing a £5m move (plus £2m in add-ons) to West Ham in the recent window.Photo by Emmanuele Ciancaglini/CPS Images/Getty ImagesShakhtar Donetsk chief expects Tottenham to pay compensation following Manor Solomon’s departureAfter the winger’s move to Spurs, the Shakhtar hierarchy reportedly met with Tottenham to seek a small fee for Solomon. The Ukrainian club’s chief executive Sergei Palkin has now shared that during those discussions, the Premier League side agreed to pay compensation to Shakhtar when Solomon finally departed the club.Speaking about the 27-year-old winger, Palkin told BBC Sport: “We had arguments and discussions with Tottenham. Verbally, we agreed that when they sell the player, they will pay us part of the sale.“Now we will come to them officially with our suggestions and our view of the situation. If we have problems in these discussions and negotiations, we will go to some intermediaries.”Palkin also suggested that his club may seek legal recourse if the North London club do not play ball.Asked who those intermediaries would be, he added: “I don’t know yet. Maybe the European Club Association or CAS (Court of Arbitration for Sport). It depends. If they are friendly and we agree, then this issue is closed. It’s better to do it in a friendly way.”Why Shakhtar may have a hard time convincing Spurs to pay compensationOne factor which could affect any agreement between the parties is the fact that Shakhtar held those talks regarding Solomon with a different leadership group at Tottenham, headed by Daniel Levy. There have been huge changes to the Spurs’ top brass since then, and it is unclear if the current hierarchy will feel indebted due to a verbal promise made by the club’s former chairman.Tottenham would also argue that while they may have signed Solomon on a free, they covered his wages for a large part of his three-year spell at the club, even though the winger was often injured and unavailable.READ MORE: Tottenham battling Arsenal and Chelsea to sign young Roma defender Emanuele LulliThe post 'Verbally we agreed' - Shakhtar Donetsk expect compensation from Tottenham Hotspur appeared first on Spurs Web.
