Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher has given his assessment of Rodrigo Bentancur’s red card in Tottenham’s 1-1 draw at Old Trafford.Bentancur, who came on as a substitute on 66 minutes, was sent off just five minutes after United opened the scoring through Bryan Mbeumo. The Tottenham midfielder made two full-blooded challenges before being shoved to the ground by Luke Shaw. The Uruguayan got up and leaned in with his head towards the United left-back, with the referee deeming it to be violent conduct and brandishing a red card. However, Roberto De Zerbi was not too disappointed with Bentancur for losing his head, with the Tottenham boss feeling that the red card sparked a reaction from his side, which eventually led to the Lilywhites’ stoppage-time equaliser.Photo by Alex Livesey/Getty ImagesDermot Gallagher insists Tottenham’s red card was the correct decisionSpurs legend Graham Roberts blasted Stuart Attwell for his decision, questioning why Shaw stayed on the pitch despite starting the altercation with Bentancur.Roberts said: “I hope Howard Webb comes out and apologises to Tottenham regarding the referee and explains why he never sent Luke Shaw off.“If you lift your hands to someone’s body and face, that is a red card by the law. But he will hide and say nothing. Rodrigo Bentancur should have stayed down, but Stuart Attwell is always against us every time we have him.”However, Dermot Gallagher believes that the decision to send the Spurs midfielder off was a straightforward one, insisting that he has not encountered too many people who disagree with the call. The former referee said on Sky Sports Ref Watch: “I think it’s a red card. I haven’t spoken to many people who think it isn’t. I just wonder if it could have been avoided.“That tackle (Bentancur sliding on Shaw) has got to be punished. If you give a free-kick for that, it all goes away. What follows, though, I think it’s a red card.”Jay Bothroyd believes Luka Shaw’s actions were more dangerous than Bentancur’sFormer Cardiff City striker Jay Bothroyd felt that Bentancur was out of control when he went flying in for a challenge prior to the altercation with Shaw.He opined that the Tottenham midfielder deserved a booking just for the challenge, but added that Shaw’s push on Bentancur was more dangerous than the Spurs man’s headbutt.Bothroyd added: “If Bentancur was closer to the sideline, he could have hurt himself, which would be dangerous play. That first Bentancur challenge should definitely be a booking. He’s left the floor; he’s out of control. It’s an aggressive challenge.“But by the letter of the law, as soon as you put your head in someone’s face, you’re gonna get a red card. But I would say Shaw’s push is more dangerous than Bentancur’s. If he’s close enough to the touchline, he’s flying into them boards. If any of those two challenges catch Shaw, he’s coming off the pitch injured.”READ MORE: De Zerbi warned he is ‘doing more harm than good’ with Luca Williams-Barnett at TottenhamThe post Former referee gives Bentancur red card verdict, but should Luke Shaw have gone too? appeared first on Spurs Web.
