Hey, I wanted to share something I’ve been building on my own for the last months. It’s called WhatTheTalk (whatthetalk.com). The idea is simple: you get connected with a native speaker for a 30 min conversation, and you get matched on stuff you’re both into, like football, cooking, music, travel, whatever. It’s not a lesson. No grammar, no course, you just talk. Why I built it: I’m French and I went to the US alone at 15 for a year of high school. My English got good because I had to talk every day, not because of the classes. Later I lived in Denmark, Sweden and the UK, and every time it was the same thing. Apps and courses got me to a certain level, then I was stuck until I had real conversations. Finding someone to just talk with, about something you both care about, was always the hard part. Right now it works for English, French, German and Spanish. It’s a two-sided platform, so native speakers sign up on one side and learners on the other. The stack, for people who care: Next.js on Vercel, Supabase for the database and auth, and I built most of it with Claude Code. I’m not a developer by background, I come from sales, so this has been a big learning curve for me. Around 50 people signed up without me doing any marketing, which is why I decided to push it more now. If you’re learning one of these languages and want to be connected with a native speaker, come and try it. And if you’re a builder, I’d really like honest feedback: Is it clear what the site does within a few seconds? Would you trust talking to someone you’ve never met through it? What would make you trust it more? Anything that feels broken or confusing? Thanks for reading submitted by /u/Parking_Committee_77 [link] [comments]
