Malta’s landscapes, Mediterranean light and rich cultural heritage have inspired a brand-new art exhibition at the Malta International Contemporary Art Space (MICAS) in Floriana.Titled A New Life Force, the exhibition brings together three international artists, Nathanaëlle Herbelin, Kemi Onabulé and Megan Rooney, whose paintings offer unique interpretations of the Maltese Islands. The exhibition was officially opened by President Myriam Spiteri Debono and is curated by MICAS Artistic Director Edith Devaney. Each artist has drawn inspiration from a different aspect of Malta, transforming local surroundings, traditions and history into contemporary works of art.Nathanaëlle Herbelin has incorporated influences from Malta’s religious traditions, particularly the devotional ex-voto objects found in churches and historic buildings.Meanwhile, London-based artist Kemi Onabulé has taken inspiration from Malta’s landscapes, vegetation and history, creating a collection of striking paintings, including some of her largest works to date.Canadian artist Megan Rooney has focused on the island’s distinctive Mediterranean light, producing vibrant, large-scale abstract paintings inspired by the changing natural light within the MICAS galleries.Speaking about the exhibition, MICAS Artistic Director Edith Devaney explained that visitors will be able to recognise familiar elements of Malta’s culture, geography and history throughout the artworks.President Myriam Spiteri Debono also highlighted the importance of giving greater visibility to women in the arts, while celebrating the role of cultural institutions in bringing together different artistic perspectives.MICAS Executive Chairperson Phyllis Muscat described the exhibition as an example of how international artists can develop meaningful connections with Malta through their work. The exhibition is open at the MICAS Ospizio complex in Floriana and will run until 31st January 2027.Visitors can also enjoy free admission on Sundays, with a complimentary guided tour available at 11am. The museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday, with extended opening hours until 8pm on Fridays and Saturdays. Will you be visiting this new exhibition at MICAS?Photo credits to Bridie O’Sullivan, Milena Villalon, Julian Vassallo and Roberto Goodman•
