Former Tottenham centre‑back Toby Alderweireld has revealed that the club’s famous 2019 Champions League comeback against Ajax left him with a “strange feeling.”That night in Amsterdam remains a memorable one for many Tottenham Hotspur players and fans alike, as Lucas Moura sent Spurs through to their first-ever Champions League final when it looked as though all hope was lost.Spurs came into the semi-final tie a goal down and quickly found themselves two down on the night. However, a sensational hat-trick from Moura was enough to send Tottenham through, leaving everyone on the pitch that day simply ecstatic.Heung-min Son shared how he felt on the night: “No, there was no believing, you know, like we need to score three goals. In the first half we were in the locker room and we were like, don’t give up, let’s try, and then let’s go first goal.“We were out there and Lucas scored and I was like, let’s grab the ball. I didn’t even think he was going to score another one. Then he scored the second goal – what’s going on here? And then last minute of the game, he scored the final goal.“I was like, probably the best feeling I ever had. Even though I won the Europa League, all the adrenaline was so high, it was crazy. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.”Photo by VI Images via Getty ImagesToby Alderweireld reflects on Tottenham’s famous nightAnd while it was a glorious moment for many Tottenham players, for centre-back Toby Alderweireld it was a bittersweet experience as he had to knock out his boyhood club.Speaking about the night in Amsterdam, he said: “We lost the first leg of the semi-final 1-0 at home, then were 2-0 down at half-time in Amsterdam.“We needed to score three, and we weren’t playing well – I thought ‘I want to go home, this is not going to happen’.”Tottenham had just 45 minutes to complete one of the greatest comebacks in Champions League history, and head coach Mauricio Pochettino made a big roll of the dice when he introduced Fernando Llorente. Spurs changed their approach, swapping intricate football for a more bruising style of play. That tactical switch put Tottenham on the front foot and changed the trajectory of the match.Alderweireld then continued: “Then Fernando Llorente came on and we played some power football with long balls, because we were a physically strong team. Lucas Moura scored the first, and the second.”Alderweireld admits bittersweet emotions after Moura hat-trickMoura would later go on to complete his hat-trick to send Tottenham through, and while Alderweireld enjoyed every moment, he admits it felt a little strange. He continued: “When he got the third in the last minute, it was unbelievable. To kill the dream of my former club was a strange feeling. They gave me my education and made me a pro, so I’ll always be grateful.“But football is like that, and I was happy – I was going to a Champions League final.”READ MORE: Toby Alderweireld reveals one thing he ‘couldn’t come to terms with’ at TottenhamThe post Toby Alderweireld reveals why he felt ‘strange’ after iconic Tottenham 3-2 Ajax win appeared first on Spurs Web.
