Ally McCoist believes Richarlison’s attitude is proving he deserves a return to Tottenham’s first team squad. The striker played his first match for the club in two months; however, it was for the Under-21s in the Jersey Mike’s Trophy at Cheltenham Town on Tuesday night. He equalised in the second half with a first-time finish from a cross before Miracle Adewole put Tottenham ahead.GettyThe Brazil international was left out of the Premier League squad by Roberto De Zerbi at the start of the season.Meanwhile, he did not feature in either of Spurs’ Carabao Cup games with Charlton and Liverpool, although he was on the bench for the former. The Tottenham boss omitted the club’s top goalscorer last season from the squad, after failed transfers away, including to former side Everton. It was reported in the summer that Richarlison repeatedly asked to leave north London during the summer but a suitable deal could not be found. After the English transfer window ended, he almost left for Brazil in a loan move to Vasco, but Tottenham had reached their limit of international loans and a permanent switch could not be sealed. Now the forward may have to get used to the lower leagues, with the EFL Trophy offering him a rare opportunity to gain competitive minutes before the January transfer opens.Richarlison playing for the Under-21sDuring the fixture against League Two Cheltenham, the 29-year-old managed to get on the scoresheet with an equaliser in a 2-2 draw. The game ultimately went to penalties and Richarlison converted his spot-kick but Tottenham ultimately lost 7-6 on penalties.Speaking on the Sports Breakfast, McCoist believes De Zerbi should be impressed by Richarlison’s attitude and should consider re-admitting the player back into the senior squad. He said: “I’m not really [okay with him not being registered], because you shouldn’t cut your nose off to spite your face.Following the transfer situation, De Zerbi stated that he wants to work only with players committed to the clubGetty“If a manager has better options, I understand it totally, but if they’ve not got better options, it looks to me at Tottenham right now, you’d certainly have him in and around it, wouldn’t you?”Alan Brazil added: “What I will say is him going to Cheltenham last night, and performing and scoring for the Under-21s – well done, son.”However, McCoist considered another perspective: “We were only talking about [Lisandro] Martínez’s comments and upsetting the dressing room. Maybe Richarlison has burnt his bridges with the players with some of his comments. Maybe that’s the thing.”But McCoist later admitted Richarlison would be an ideal teammate when the going gets tough – as he was last season. He added: “I genuinely do think when he goes on the pitch he has the right attitude.“He sometimes gets involved in things that he probably shouldn’t. But I would argue that when he does go on the pitch, and if you’re one of his teammates, you know he’s with you all the way. With no senior football since the opening day defeat to Brentford, Richarlison was handed a start for Wayne Burnett’s young Spurs side and quickly made an impact.Getty“You may question when he gets involved in things that he shouldn’t. But yeah, fair play to him, back there playing and scoring, that’s the kind of reaction you would want from a player.”Spurs’ final-third issuesJust six games into the new Premier League season, Tottenham may already be regretting their decision not to register Richarlison.Since arriving from Everton, he has scored 27 top-flight goals in 103 appearances. He was Tottenham’s top goalscorer in all competitions last season, netting 11 times in 32 appearances as they narrowly avoided relegation to the Championship.Despite spending over £300million on new recruits over the summer, Spurs failed to score in their first four Premier League games this campaign and only have three in total.Manager De Zerbi, though, was pleased with Dominic Solanke’s performance as his first goal of the season rescued a point at Old Trafford despite Spurs being reduced to 10 men.It was the first Premier League goal from a Tottenham forward since Richarlison netted against Chelsea back in May.
