The project aims to strengthen the hospital’s electricity supply and support upcoming expansions, including new emergency, medical imaging and mental health facilities.Mater Dei Hospital is set for a major electricity infrastructure upgrade, with the government issuing a call for tenders for a new distribution centre to strengthen power supply reliability and support the hospital’s future expansion. The project, announced on Saturday morning by Deputy Prime Minister and Health Minister Ian Borg and Energy Minister Miriam Dalli, will see a new electricity distribution centre constructed within the hospital grounds. The investment is intended to reinforce Mater Dei’s existing electricity infrastructure, which dates back to 2007, while providing additional capacity to meet the hospital’s growing energy demands. The new facility will be equipped with transformers, switchgear and other control and protection systems, while two additional high-voltage feeders will connect the hospital to Enemalta’s distribution centre in Kappara. The project will also upgrade Mater Dei’s standby electricity systems, providing greater redundancy and helping ensure that essential hospital services can continue operating reliably. The additional capacity will support several planned developments at Mater Dei, including the new Medical Imaging Department building currently under construction, the recently launched Emergency Department extension and new acute mental health wards.Borg described the project as an essential investment in the hospital’s future.“This project will energise our plans to future-proof our country’s principal tertiary care hospital and meet growing demand for its wide range of services,” he said.He added that the investment, alongside technological upgrades, more efficient administrative processes and continued investment in healthcare workers, would help improve the quality and efficiency of patient care.Meanwhile, Dalli emphasised the importance of reliable electricity infrastructure for critical services such as healthcare.“Reliable electricity is fundamental to the delivery of essential services. This investment is about strengthening the resilience of Mater Dei Hospital today, while ensuring that its infrastructure will continue supporting the healthcare services and facilities of tomorrow,” she said.Dalli added that the project forms part of the government’s wider commitment to modernising Malta’s electricity network and ensuring it can meet the country’s changing needs. The project is being coordinated by the Foundation for Medical Services in collaboration with Mater Dei Hospital and Enemalta. The deadline for submitting tenders is Tuesday 1st December of this year.•
