I'm building NextCandle, which compares candle sequences with historical examples. Today's report exposed a different problem from the translation fallback I wrote about yesterday: how missing evidence turns into a confident explanation. In the English version of report 159, generated on October 15 at 00:06:35 UTC (09:06:35 KST), the March 9, 2012 example has price candles but no source_references entry tagged with that pattern date. Yet its narrative describes a quiet period and trading without major issues. The response supports a narrower statement: this report contains no news reference for that example. It doesn't establish that nothing important happened. Other examples have traceable context. The September 3, 2015 pattern points to an August 27 Bitcoin Magazine article about Tim Draper's expectations for Bitcoin as a store of value. Reading it matters: he was discussing a possible future role, with qualifications about speculation, not reporting that Bitcoin had already become a safe haven. Today's report also cites a DigitalToday article about Standard Chartered opening direct crypto trading to eligible wealthy clients in the UAE. An actual service offering and an investor's expectation are different kinds of evidence; neither establishes why a candle moved. My takeaway is to preserve that distinction before generating prose: a price observation can exist while its news context remains unknown. For a missing source, I'd rather show “No linked news in this report” and leave the interpretation open. A failed retrieval and a completed search with no results should also be different states. This is a design direction, not a claim that I've deployed a fix. The same caution applies to the comparisons themselves: similarity is not a win rate, and the returned examples are not every occurrence in market history. If you've built a product that explains retrieved data, where do you enforce this boundary: in the input schema, the generation step, or a separate claim-to-source check?
