I think adult med surg is getting on my last nerve…

Wait 5 sec.

I’m a new grad yet I’m so burnt out already just from preceptorship on 2 med surg floors. I was denied a preceptorship on pediatric floor so I thought I might like med surg, but after going through it, I am hating it more and more. And i hate to have to say it’s not even the patient population that makes me annoyed, I actually find my patients being the only reason that makes me want to push through. What’s really getting on my nerves is the staff on a med surg floor. Going through nursing school and meeting some mean nurses is one thing. But why does every staff on med surg makes me feel like I’m a punch bag that can be pushed around. Older nurses (basically everyone bc I’m a new grad) tells me to do something for them because I was sitting down, but little did they know I’m on my fight or flight mode the whole times and only was I pushing myself so hard that I can finally get to sit. Also doctors getting annoyed at me for talking too slow like why does that bother you that I make a few extra seconds more than others? Also fucking hate the ones that don’t write down their own orders. And physio asking me to get pain med when I haven’t seen my other patients, like if they expect nurses to be giving prn stat for mobility, I also should have the right to know when they are getting my patients up at the start of the shift. Instead of showing up and asking me to throw away every other tasks for them. Also I don’t get why we are setting up stretchers and putting away meal trays when it’s porter and dietary job. Also the constant ringing for toileting and I’m the only one who’s getting it because we have no care aids. I totally get it it’s a management issue and I was definitely at a pretty shitty hospital. But it’s not like it’s not common in nursing. Seriously I feel like a slave on every med surg floor I was on, everyone makes their thing a priority when none of those are seriously my business, they compete for whoever is the best crybaby to get my attention, and so many times that leads to nurses failing to recognize dangerous complications until the patient codes. And I can’t help thinking RN school is a scam for tricking high achievers into doing blue collar job while having a white collar brain and show kindness like a pink collar. Ps: Everywhere else no matter it’s community clinic or mental health or peds or maternity, the environment seems a lot less toxic than med surg. Never have I get yelled at or passive agressived by any of the staff in those areas. submitted by /u/Aggressive_Hawk9073 [link] [comments]
