New Social Worker to Hospital Case Management: How Much Training Should I Expect?

Wait 5 sec.

For nurses working in hospital case management, I’d love to hear about your experience, especially when it comes to training and onboarding new team members. I recently started my first position in hospital social work/case management, and I’m really enjoying it so far. However, my training experience has been somewhat limited. One of my trainers is an RN, and the other is an LMSW. While I understand that everyone has their own workload and responsibilities, I get the feeling that don’t want to be bothered with training new staff specifically the nurse (nothing against nurses 🙏) or extremely busy. For context, this isn’t my first professional job. I’ve been working for over 10 years and recently decided to transition into a new career. I’m independent, proactive, and comfortable taking initiative. I take notes, create my own reference guides, conduct research, and make an effort not to ask the same questions repeatedly. I don’t expect anyone to hold my hand, but I do want to receive adequate training so I can become competent and independent in my role. As part of my training plan, my supervisor expects me to see approximately 5–10 patients per day. However, I’m often assigned only 0–3 patients, leaving me with little to do beyond observing. I come in each day asking what I can do and how I can help, but without more opportunities to actively participate in patient cases, I’m finding it difficult to develop the skills and confidence I’ll need once I’m expected to work independently. I did speak with my supervisor, but I’m curious to hear from nurses who have worked in hospital case management with training other staff, specifically a social worker. Is this a common experience when starting out, or are new employees generally expected to figure things out as they go? For those who have trained new employees or experienced a similar situation, what advice would you offer? I’d appreciate any insight, especially from nurses who have experience training new staff or working alongside hospital social workers. Thank you! submitted by /u/Low-Sprinkles7916 [link] [comments]
