Steven Gerrard has just sent a warning to Roberto De Zerbi and the Tottenham squad about their warm-weather training camp in Marbella.Given that Spurs have a nine-day break between the clash against Man Utd and their upcoming match against Coventry City, De Zerbi and his players have travelled to sunny Spain. The Tottenham boss confessed the main purpose of the trip is to make the squad a tighter unit, and for the players to bond off the pitch. When asked about the training camp in Spain, De Zerbi said: “Yes, because we have to build the team. Now the target is to build the team, not the group of players. We are a great group of players, but we are not a team yet. Today, this game, we show to be a team. And to be a team is to play for the teammates, suffer together, attack together, defend together.”When asked if it was important for his players to socialise, the Italian said: “To stay together, yes. To work together, to stay together, to go for dinner together, to know better each other, because to be a team you have to know your teammates, and to stay together.”Credit: @thefrederikkejensen / InstagramSteven Gerrard warns Tottenham players things can get out of control in MarbellaIn his appearance on The Overlap Daily, Gerrard spoke about his own experiences of having mid-season training camps in Marbella both as a player and a coach. His Liverpool team under Rafa Benitez infamously had a karaoke night go wrong in Marbella back in 2007, as Craig Bellamy lost control and swung a golf club at John Arne Riise.Ironically, both players ended up scoring in the Champions League clash against Barcelona just days later and Bellamy celebrated by swinging an imaginary golf club at his Liverpool teammate. When it was put to Gerrard that the Spurs players are going to Marbella for the week, the Reds legend shook his head before saying: “You’re speaking to the wrong person. You’re speaking to the wrong person, I’m telling you, because whilst they can work and they can be beneficial, I’ve experienced it with Rangers going to Dubai, and we derailed one year, and then we did it the year after and we improved and kicked on.“So I’ve seen the pros and the cons, and I’ve experienced the pros and the cons. I would say Marbella is brave just in terms of location and risk, because there’s a lot of other places where you can go that are probably safer. Although the players nowadays are a different generation from us and the generation before.“But as soon as you mentioned it, it just sprung to mind, and I just think of mid-season camps. I just think, be careful, be very careful, especially if you’re in a position like Spurs, when you’re down the bottom of the table. Be very careful. And Marbella to me, I just think risk. I just think risk. The team bonding worked in terms of the result, but I’m just talking about the risk. You have to be really careful when you’re away, especially when you’re in Marbella.”Why the Marbella trip may be a necessity for SpursRarely, if ever, has a squad seen as much turnover in one transfer window as Tottenham just had in the summer. 10 new players arrived through the door while there were double-digit exits, which means that half the squad is essentially new.IncomingsAndrew RobertsonFreeMarcos SenesiFreeMartin DubravkaFreeJan Paul van Hecke£52mMateus Fernandes£85mSandro Tonali£100mSavinho£85mOmar Marmoush£60mTosin Adarabioyo£12mMykhailo MudrykLoanTotal spent£394mOutgoingsLuka Vuskovic£50mWill Lankshear£20mRadu Dragusin£21mAlejo Veliz£7.7mAlfie Devine£6mTynan Thompson£8mManor Solomon£7mCristian Romero£34.1mAshley Phillips£20mDjed Spence£30mKevin Danso£25mPape Matar Sarr£25.6mTotal received£254.8mTottenham’s net spend£139.2mThat perhaps makes trips and social gatherings like this even more important as De Zerbi attempts to bring a sense of togetherness and camaraderie among the players.
