Three ways Tottenham could line up against Coventry City without Savio

Roberto De Zerbi confirmed that Savio will be unavailable for Tottenham’s Premier League clash against Coventry City, leaving the head coach with a decision to make over how best to replace his directness and creativity. Here are three possible line-ups De Zerbi could turn to on Monday.“Every time I’ve seen the light at the end of the tunnel, it’s usually been an oncoming train. We seem to be losing players as we get them back.”Those were the words of former Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou in January last year, and two managers later, Spurs are still dealing with the same frustrating cycle. Roberto De Zerbi delivered the welcome news that Dejan Kulusevski will return to the matchday squad after more than 500 days out, but he also confirmed that Tottenham have lost two valuable players over the past week through injury: Savio and Lucas Bergvall.Bergvall’s absence may be easier to manage given the number of quality alternatives available in midfield. Savio, however, is a different problem. The Brazilian has been one of Tottenham’s standout performers this season, whether deployed on the right or left wing. His ability to take on defenders and create chances in the final third has made him a valuable outlet for De Zerbi. In fact, the former Manchester City winger ranks second in the Premier League this season for dribbles per 90 minutes, behind only his Tottenham team-mate Mohammed Kudus. Replacing that directness will not be easy, but De Zerbi has a few options to consider.Credit: @reclusemedia / Instagram1. De Zerbi could stick largely with his Manchester United line-upKinsky; Gray, Van Hecke, Van de Ven, Udogie; Fernandes, Tonali, Gallagher; Kudus, Solanke, MarmoushThis looks like the most likely option if De Zerbi wants to avoid unnecessary changes to a side that largely impressed during the 1-1 draw against Manchester United. The only adjustments would be Mateus Fernandes and Omar Marmoush coming in for the injured Bergvall and Savio, while captain Micky Van de Ven returns to his centre-back spot in place of Marcos Senesi. There is little reason for De Zerbi to overhaul the side after that performance. Most of the players did enough to retain their starting places, and Van de Ven’s return to his preferred position would restore a more familiar defensive set-up.2. De Zerbi could reward Mathys Tel for his impressive international breakKinsky; Gray, Van Hecke, Van de Ven, Udogie; Fernandes, Tonali, Maddison; Kudus, Solanke, TelMathys Tel has struggled on the left wing for Tottenham this season, which led to him losing his place in the starting XI last month. However, the Frenchman made a strong case for himself during the international break, scoring five goals in three starts for France Under-21s. He was an unused substitute against Man United, likely down to managing his workload, but his international performances could put him back in contention.Tel could therefore be preferred to Marmoush on the left, depending on who has impressed De Zerbi most in training. His pace and ability to take on defenders would give Tottenham a different attacking dimension, particularly against a Coventry side that may leave spaces for Spurs to exploit. There is also a second change in this line-up, with James Maddison handed his first Tottenham start in 18 months. Gallagher performed well at Old Trafford, but Coventry, under Frank Lampard, present a different challenge. They have pressed aggressively this season, and Gallagher‘s first touch isn’t as good when compared to a natural number 10. Coventry will give him less time and space to recover from those moments compared to United, making Maddison’s creativity an appealing alternative – only if he is fit enough.3. De Zerbi could bench Dominic Solanke after his missed chances against UnitedKinsky; Gray, Van Hecke, Van de Ven, Udogie; Fernandes, Tonali, Maddison; Kudus, Marmoush, TelDominic Solanke rescued a point for Tottenham with his stoppage-time equaliser against United when his side were a man down, but the striker will know he should have scored more after missing several promising opportunities earlier in the game. De Zerbi could decide to make a bold call by dropping him against Coventry, if he wants to use Marmoush as a central striker alongside Tel and Kudus. With Maddison operating as the number 10 in this line-up, Marmoush could be the more suitable option ahead of Solanke. The Egyptian is better at receiving the ball, finding spaces and playing the incisive pass, which could make him the more appropriate target for Maddison’s passes through the centre of the park. However, leaving Solanke out would mean Tottenham lose a physical presence inside the opposition box, and that is not exactly a compromise De Zerbi would be willing to make. At the end of the day, Solanke is better at getting on the end of chances than Marmoush, who prefers to carry the ball from a deeper position.READ MORE: Tottenham vs Coventry City Premier League preview, team news, predicted XI – Spurs WebThe post Three ways Tottenham could line up against Coventry City without Savio appeared first on Spurs Web.
