Open-source chrome extension: IMDb ratings overlaid on Netflix, Prime, Hulu and HBO Max while you browse

Wait 5 sec.

I got tired of alt-tabbing to check IMDb while browsing, so I had this built. It puts a small IMDb badge with the rating in the corner of every title card on Netflix, Prime Video, Hulu and HBO Max. Hovering a title adds the year and vote count to the site's own preview popup, and clicking that opens the IMDb page. I tested it using Windows 11 and the current Chrome release. Download (ZIP, load unpacked): https://github.com/Lwolf12/chromeext/releases Source: https://github.com/Lwolf12/chromeext/tree/main/imdb-ratings Things worth knowing: - Not on the Web Store. You load it unpacked from chrome://extensions with Developer mode on. Three clicks, instructions on the release page. - No account and no key. On first run you click Update now and it builds its own ratings database in your browser from IMDb's public data (about 240 MB downloaded from IMDb, a few minutes). After that, lookups happen locally and nothing is sent anywhere while you browse. - It refreshes the database weekly on its own. That's a checkbox, so you can turn it off and update by hand if you're on a metered connection. - Optional: a free OMDb API key fills in titles the database doesn't have yet, like something released last week. Most people won't bother. - Permissions are the four streaming sites, IMDb's data download site, and OMDb if you use a key. No tracking. Known limit: Netflix cards don't say whether a title is a movie or a show, so a remake and its original can occasionally get mixed up. Hovering fixes most of those, since the preview tells the extension which it is. Full disclosure: Claude Code wrote the code. My part was the idea, deciding what it should do on each site, and testing it on all four services. submitted by /u/stark2 to r/chrome_extensions [link] [comments]
