About 35% of American investors own crypto, and it averages 10% of their portfolios, according to Charles Schwab's 2025 Modern Wealth Survey. Until recently, holding both meant running two platforms, and the cost of that split never appeared as a fee. It showed up as cash parked between transfers, trades that waited days to fund, and a second tax form every spring. Stock options make that cost harder to absorb, because they run on deadlines a bank transfer doesn't respect. With options on US stocks now sitting in the same exchange account as spot crypto, the split portfolio can finally be priced against the alternative. What the Brokerage-Plus-Exchange Setup Actually CostsA split setup rarely shows up as a fee line. It shows up as money waiting. M1 investors held 4.1% of portfolios in cash on average at the end of June 2026, a balance M1 itself describes as cash drag.Moving between platforms adds lag. Selling a US stock to buy bitcoin across a broker, a bank and an exchange can take two to three business days end to end, Foresight News estimates, even though US equities have settled on a T+1 cycle since May 28, 2024. Many investors never make the trip. Only17% of individuals have moved money from a checking account to a crypto platform—as per the JPMorgan Chase Institute. Reporting doubles as well with US brokers now filing digital asset sales on Form 1099-DA alongside 1099-B.Stock options sharpen the problem because they run on deadlines. Exercising a call requires cash for 100 shares per contract at the strike price, held in the same account, and a protective put works best when the hedge and the position share one view of collateral. If the cash sits on one platform and the options on another, transfer lag lands at exactly the wrong moment. For eligible users outside the US, Binance now offers options on 1,000-plus US stocks and ETFs in the same account as spot crypto, bStocks and perpetual futures, turning the multi-platform workflow into a product switch inside one interface. Contracts can be funded from Funding, Spot or Flexible Earn balances in USDC, USDT, USD1, U or BNB, at a $0.60 commission per contract with no spread on the USDC/USD conversion. Settlement still applies, though. Sale proceeds settle T+1 and, until then, can fund spot or TradFi trades but not futures, margin or withdrawals."Stock options are an important next step in Binance's evolution into a fuller multi-asset platform. By adding options on selected US stocks and ETFs, we are expanding the tools available to users who want to participate in equity markets, manage exposure, and access strategies that have historically been offered through traditional brokers," says Shunyet Jan, Head of Exchange and Trading at Binance, "all from one Binance account."Consolidation Around Stock Options Shows Up in Investor BehaviorOptions demand is growing fastest among the accounts that most need capital efficiency. Cboe reports that activity amongretail accounts under $25,000 rose in the second quarter of 2026, and says the repeal of the Pattern Day Trader rule "may have been a contributing factor." The SEC approved replacing the $25,000 minimum on April 14, 2026, effective June 4.The same Cboe data, built from Rule 606 disclosures, places Charles Schwab, Robinhood and Interactive Brokers among the largest sources of retail options flow. All three already hold their customers' stocks and cash. Shrinking trade sizes need careful reading, though, since an average mixes many kinds of flow and institutions still generate40% to 45% of SPX 0DTE customer volume.Saxo's five-year client data points the same way: investors who used more than one product type tended to be more profitable than single-product clients. Saxo calls that association rather than causation, and the caveat applies here too."We are just giving what our users want and giving more choices," Jan said in a Bloomberg interview. Inside one account, consolidation shows up as capital reused across products long before anyone closes a brokerage account. In July, 58.5% of bStocks holders also traded perpetual futures, direct equities or all three, according to Binance. One Login, One Point of Failure?Plenty of investors split their holdings on purpose. In the same Schwab survey, 46% preferred multiple portfolios alongside a main account, against 39% who keep one portfolio for every goal.Concentration carries its own cost. One login means one set of credentials, one compliance review and one jurisdictional rule book, and a restriction applied at the platform level reaches every product at once. A unified interface also removes transfer lag while leaving market hours and settlement cycles exactly where they were.Spreading assets across venues spreads them across legal structures, too. A single multi-asset account can sit on top of several entities, so delivered shares, tokenized securities, derivatives and stablecoin balances may each fall under a different protection regime. SIPC states it does not protect unregistered digital asset securities while traditional US brokerage accounts carry SIPC protection up to $500,00, including $250,000 in cash.Where One Account Earns Its PlaceConsolidation tends to pay for investors who move capital between asset classes often, keep balances idle waiting for the next trade, or use options to hedge positions held in the same account. Separation still makes sense for balances well above any protection limit, and for investors who need a protection regime, trading window or settlement path that one venue can't provide. Either way, it's a structural decision: faster capital in one place on one side, distributed risk on the other. This article was written by FM Contributors at www.financemagnates.com.
