Saturday racing tips – best racing bets and expert advice for Ascot’s Champions Day

Wait 5 sec.

The Flat trainers’ championship reaches its conclusion on Saturday and that’s just one of the many interesting angles to consider at Ascot for their Champions Day card. There are no fewer than five Group 1s to look forward to and it’s going to be a cracker.Obviously, the main event is the Champion Stakes, where there’s £1,300,000 on offer for the 1m2f Group 1. Calandagan and Ombudsman lock horns again and it’s set to be an epic clash, with a further three Group 1 winners in the field, including Constitution River. We have tasked our expert with selecting three strong fancies to follow across Ascot’s outstanding card and among them is an Aidan O’Brien runner in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes who fully deserves to land another top tier Group 1 this season.talkSPORT BET Betting Offer – Bet £10 and get up to £30 – CLAIM HERE*Champions Day tips13:30 Ascot – Highwayman @ 3/115:20 Ascot – Gstaad @ 3/116:00 Ascot – Ombudsman @ 2/113:30 Ascot – Highwayman @ 3/1It’s very hard to know how good Joseph O’Brien’s HIGHWAYMAN is at the moment, but he’s clearly going the right way and it’s very possible that there’s more to come from him. He struggled badly at the start of the season but has thrived since going significantly up in trip.He won a maiden at Killarney over an extended 1m3f by nine lengths in July and, while the form wasn’t great, the fourth has boosted it by winning since. Connections stepped him up in trip again for a Listed contest over 1m6f at Leopardstown next and he won comfortably.A trip to Doncaster was next on the agenda and he won the St Leger with plenty in hand, staying on strongly at the finish. Two miles won’t be a problem on that evidence and he can take advantage of the fact that favourite Caballo De Mar had a tough race recently.15:20 Ascot – Gstaad @ 3/1Aidan O’Brien is going to need at least one big winner if he’s going to retain the British trainers’ title and GSTAAD can certainly help him to do that. The substantial first prize could seal the deal and the evidence suggests he’s the best miler still in training. One of the leading juveniles last term, he was an impressive winner of the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot and managed to win the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf too. Second to Bow Echo in the 2,000 Guineas, he made no mistake when landing the Irish equivalent next time.Narrowly denied by Bow Echo in both the St James’s Palace Stakes and the Sussex Stakes, clearly the three-year-olds are better than the older horses this year and a return to winning ways is anticipated, with stable form to blame for his below-par run last time out.16:00 Ascot – Ombudsman @ 2/1The Champion Stakes is looking like the clash of the titans this year, with OMBUDSMAN opposing his old foe Calandagan in a rematch of last year’s race. John & Thady Gosden’s five-year-old is a better horse this year and is fancied to gain his revenge.Winning his first three starts of the season, he was much too good for them at Meydan in March and he showed a good attitude at Sandown in May. He could hardly have been more impressive in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes and his course record is very good.Clearly something was amiss at York last time out and the way the race was run suited no one. It would be a good idea to put a line through that performance and he can bounce back with what would probably be the best victory of his career by coming out on top here.talkSPORT BET Betting Offer – Bet £10 and get up to £30 – CLAIM HERE*All odds correct at time of writing.Remember to gamble responsiblyA responsible gambler is someone who:Establishes time and monetary limits before playingOnly gambles with money they can afford to loseNever chase their lossesDoesn’t gamble if they’re upset, angry or depressedGamcare – www.gamcare.org.ukFind our detailed guide on responsible gambling practices here. For help with a gambling problem, call the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133 or go to www.gamstop.co.uk to be excluded from all UK-regulated gambling websites.*18+ New customers only.
