Tottenham’s creativity has shown signs of improvement this season, but the assists have yet to follow. To explore this further, Spurs Web has taken a trip down memory lane to examine how the Lilywhites’ best creators have fared in terms of assists.Tottenham Hotspur might have a goalscoring problem this season, but one aspect of their game that has improved is chance creation. In terms of big chances created, Spurs have produced 15 so far – the 12th most in the division. At this rate, they are on course to beat their tally of 71 from the 2025/26 Premier League season. This improvement is largely down to summer business. The addition of Jan Paul van Hecke, a centre-back capable of playing line-breaking passes, and the directness of Savio on the flanks have helped Spurs in this regard. However, while chances are being created, if the forwards do not convert them, it doesn’t count as an assist. So far, no player has managed more than one assist, which is hardly surprising given Tottenham have scored just three goals all campaign.Still, the underlying numbers of their creative players, especially Savio, have been outstanding. No Spurs player has created more chances than the Brazilian, who has 11. He also ranks first for expected assists (xA) and big chances created.Roberto De Zerbi stated earlier in the season that he had set a goal for Savio in terms of output, asking for double figures in goals. That surely applies to assists too. If Savio adds such end product to his game, Spurs are certain to score more. But historically, what has been the most assists a single player has managed in a campaign? Spurs Web has taken a look at the last decade to see the top three assisters for each season.Photo by Clive Rose/Getty ImagesTottenham’s top three assist creators by season 2016/17-2025/26Season1st2nd3rdTop 3 Total2016/17Christian Eriksen (15)Dele Alli (7)Harry Kane (7)292017/18Christian Eriksen (10)Dele Alli (10)Ben Davies (6)262018/19Christian Eriksen (12)Heung-min Son (6)Fernando Llorente (4)222019/20Heung-min Son (10)Serge Aurier (5)Dele Alli (4)192020/21Harry Kane (14)Heung-min Son (10)Lucas Moura (4)282021/22Harry Kane (9)Dejan Kulusevski (8)Heung-min Son (7)242022/23Ivan Perisic (8)Dejan Kulusevski (7)Heung-min Son (6)212023/24Heung-min Son (10)Brennan Johnson (10)James Maddison (9)292024/25Heung-min Son (9)James Maddison (7)Pedro Porro (6)222025/26Xavi Simons (5)Mohammed Kudus (5)Richarlison (4)14Assists and goals: the link and the problem for SpursOf course, many Spurs fans believe that if the team creates more chances, the goals will follow. The last decade, however, shows that it is only half true.SeasonTop 3 AssistsTop 3 GoalsTeam GoalsLeague Finish2016/172961862nd2017/182652743rd2018/192239674th2019/201937616th2020/212851687th2021/222445694th2022/232145708th2023/242936745th2024/2522296417th2025/2614204817thBroadly, more assists have meant more goals. The four most creative seasons averaged around 76 goals; the four least creative averaged around 61. Last season was the worst on both counts: Simons and Kudus led with just five assists each, and Spurs scored only 48.But the exceptions matter. In 2022/23, Spurs created little yet scored 70, because Harry Kane hit 30. In 2024/25, their creators matched a fourth-place season, yet Spurs still finished 17th. Chances only count if someone finishes them. So what should Tottenham’s creators aim for this campaign?SeasonTop assisterTop 3 combined2025/26514Top-four average11.525Target10+25+Spurs’ creators need to aim for one player in double figures and 25+ assists from the top three. That is what every top-four side of the last decade for Tottenham managed. There are early signs of progress, with 15 big chances created already. But three goals in six games shows where the real problem lies. The creativity is returning. Until the finishing does too, Spurs will not climb the table.READ MORE: Latest Mykhailo Mudryk development suggests Tottenham return may not be closeThe post Tottenham’s top assist kings from the last 10 years set a clear target for 2026/27 appeared first on Spurs Web.
