47-year-old John Cassar, the suspect in the Mqabba homicide which left his 72-year-old mother dead and his 74-year-old father hospitalised with serious injuries, reportedly spent the night in hospital because he was under the heavy influence of drugs. According to TVM News, Cassar had consumed “a large amount of drugs” in recent days and was being supervised by doctors before being able to be interrogated by the police over yesterday’s incident. The man is expected to be released from hospital later today, with the plan being for his interrogation to be carried out before he is taken to court tomorrow. This will all need to be carried out before the 48 hours since his arrest expire. Her husband, Ġanni, was rushed to hospital in a critical condition, but was reportedly in a stable condition earlier today. Their son John allegedly fled the scene, with police searching for him in a field close to the Monte Kristo estate. He later gave himself up to police following negotiations. John Cassar is also the brother of convicted murderer Roderick Cassar, who is currently serving a 40-year prison sentence for the murder of his wife, Bernice Cilia. Investigations are still underway and this is a developing story.•
