New grad RN torn between my dream NICU job and a $25k sign-on bonus. What would you do?

Hi everyone! I’m currently in my final semester of nursing school, and I’m feeling very torn about a huge decision. My dream has always been to become a NICU nurse. It’s the entire reason I wanted to pursue nursing in the first place. I recently received an offer to work in a Level IV NICU at one of the best hospitals in my city. The hospital has excellent benefits, and I know this is an amazing opportunity, especially as a new grad. However, the position is night shift. On the other hand, I was offered a position at another hospital in a pre-op/post-op unit. This position is day shift and comes with a $25,000 sign-on bonus, which is honestly really hard to turn down as someone just starting their nursing career. I’m struggling because one opportunity is literally my dream job, while the other offers a schedule I’d prefer and a significant financial incentive. I also wonder about long-term career growth. Would starting in the NICU limit my opportunities if I eventually wanted to explore other specialties? Would starting in pre-op/post-op give me more flexibility in the future? And if I turn down the NICU offer now, how difficult would it be to get back into that specialty later? Part of me feels like I’d regret giving up my dream before even giving it a chance, but another part of me wonders if I’m being unrealistic by passing up such a good financial opportunity. For experienced nurses/newgrads, especially NICU or pre-op/post-op nurses, what would you recommend? Is it better to follow your dream specialty right out of nursing school, or choose the position that offers better pay and work-life balance? I’d really appreciate any advice or personal experiences. I’m genuinely so torn right now. submitted by /u/groovy-cheeto [link] [comments]
