DU clears ₹5,889-crore plan for hostels for over 21,000 students - The HinduPublished - October 14, 2026 12:07 am IST - NEW DELHIDelhi University’s Executive Council on Tuesday approved a proposal to expand its hostel facilities for 21,895 students at a cost of ₹5,889 crore, according to an official statement. The decision follows growing concerns over student housing safety sparked by the Satya Niketan tragedy, and subsequent protests by students demanding hostel facilities for all.The proposal was approved by the Executive Council, chaired by Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh, the statement said. It added that the designs for these buildings will be prepared with the requirements of the 21st century in mind, and with a 100-year perspective.According to the proposal passed by the council, new hostels will be constructed at an estimated cost of ₹4,027 crore, providing additional accommodation for 15,758 students. Additionally, a proposal to reconstruct two existing hostels, Jubilee Hall and the PG Men’s Hostel, was passed at an estimated cost of ₹1,862 crore to provide residential facilities for 6,137 students.It added, “According to the proposal passed by the DU Executive Council, apart from the hostel construction at the Dhaka Complex, hostels for both boys and girls are to be built at Veer Savarkar College in Roshanpura (Najafgarh).
