A TikTok user says she was surprised by the size of her large fries from McDonald’s, claiming the portion looked smaller than what she remembered. She shared a video of the moment from inside her car, showing the bag and the fry container to her camera. The TikToker, who goes by Minda T (@minda2.o) online, captioned her video “feeling scammed.” On-screen text on the video reads, “McDonald’s large fries in a small bag??” The video shows Minda sitting in the driver’s seat, holding a brown McDonald’s paper bag with a soccer ball graphic and the word “Grimace” printed on it. McDonald’s fries have drawn attention for other reasons too, including one customer’s lawsuit over burn injuries. She continues in the video, saying, “This isn’t a large!” She then adds, “That’s no f–king large. I’m p–sed off.” The comment section picked up on the packaging switch fast. One pointed out the bag “and it’s not over full,” while another seemed genuinely thrown by the format change, asking, “Fries in a bag? What is happening.” Another commenter pinned the switch to about a month before Minda’s post, writing “like a month ago change” – to which Minda herself replied, simply, “I’m sick.” Not everyone was convinced something was actually wrong, though. One argued, “That looks like the same amount of fries just in a different package,” and another user went further, claiming the bag “actually fits more then the cardboard lg fries.” According to Brobible, former corporate chef Mike Haracz commented on ways the company could reduce food costs, though he has not addressed the fry bag specifically. He said there are several things they could do to make it more affordable, with the loophole of it needing to be a quarter pound before cooking, referring to the meat patty. He suggested the company could mix frozen meat with fresh meat, or adjust the ratio of lean meat to fat in the beef, since fat renders out during cooking. Haracz also posted a video addressing the broader cost of fries. A 2023 lawsuit filed by a customer accused McDonald’s and Wendy’s of serving smaller burgers than advertised. According to Reuters, U.S. District Judge Hector Gonzalez in Brooklyn found no proof that the fast-food chains delivered smaller burgers than advertised. A YouTube video from a channel called Gourmet Origins claimed that shrinkflation in fast food began in the 2010s, with items like the Filet-O-Fish reportedly getting a lighter patty and thinner buns over time. The video claimed this became more noticeable in the 2020s, with social media users comparing patty thickness, bun height, and cheese size. According to portion size figures cited in the video, a current small fry order weighs 80 grams, while a large one is 150 grams. The original 1955 McDonald’s fry serving, which was the only size offered at the time, reportedly weighed 68 grams. Other McDonald’s videos have offered a look at how their food is really made, giving customers more insight into the process behind their orders.
