MLS has found its new commissioner. Larry Berg, part-owner of LAFC, was selected as the league’s new commissioner, MLS announced Monday. Berg will officially begin as commissioner on January 1, 2027 once Don Garber transitions from commissioner to chairman. Berg will become the third-ever commissioner in MLS’ history, taking over for Garber who has served in the role since 1999. Garber helped MLS expand from 10 clubs to its current 30.“I’m honored to lead Major League Soccer into its next era,” Berg said. “We have an extraordinary opportunity to strengthen the quality of our competition, develop more world-class players, deepen our connection with supporters, and continue elevating Major League Soccer’s place in the global game. Together with our owners, clubs, players, partners, supporters, and league staff, I could not be more excited for what comes next.”In addition to his experience with LAFC, Berg also has a private equity and finance background. He has helped LAFC become one of the league’s leading clubs, watching as the Western Conference franchise has lifted one MLS Cup title, two Supporters’ Shields, and a U.S. Open Cup.Berg will have to seal his ownership stock in LAFC in order to become the league’s commissioner, as part of league rules. “Larry Berg is the right leader for Major League Soccer’s next chapter,” said Jimmy Haslam, CEO and chairman of Haslam Sports Group and co-chair of the MLS Succession Committee. “Throughout our process, it became clear that Larry is uniquely qualified to lead MLS through one of the most significant periods in its history.
