Cameron Carter-Vickers makes Celtic return in opening weekend win

Wait 5 sec.

Cameron Carter-Vickers’ lengthy wait for his Celtic return came to an end on Monday. Carter-Vickers made his first competitive appearance for Celtic since October 2025 in a 1-0 opening Scottish Premiership win over Dundee FC. The American centerback logged the full 90 minutes, his first in league play since rupturing his Achillies tendon last fall. Carter-Vickers teamed up with fellow U.S. Men’s National Team defender Auston Trusty in Martin O’Neill’s starting lineup. Trusty got the nod due to Liam Scales beginning his two-match suspension. After a goal-less first half, Celtic broke the deadlock before the interval as Benjamin Nygren propelled them in front. The Swedish midfielder headed home Kieran Tierney’s cross for a 1-0 advantage. Despite a nervous ending, Celtic hung on for three points in the opening match of its title defense. Carter-Vickers won nine duels, made 12 clearances, and drew two fouls while Trusty won five duels and made two interceptions, also helping Celtic to a first clean sheet of the new domestic season.Up next for Celtic is a trip to Kilmarnock on August 9 in league play before a visit to Dundee United in the Scottish League Cup Round of 16 on August 15.
