Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna has issued an urgent appeal to save one of Valletta’s last surviving World War II Victory Kitchen signs, warning that it is being damaged by water leaking from an air-conditioning unit above it.In a social media post, the heritage NGO said the historic sign on Melita Street is continuously being soaked by water flowing from air-conditioning units installed on the balcony overhead.“This sign, which is painted directly on the stone wall, is currently awash with air-conditioning water which continuously streams over its surface,” the foundation said.The organisation warned that unless the leak is stopped or diverted immediately, the painted sign could suffer irreversible damage through fading, flaking and further deterioration.Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna has also called for the sign to be examined by professional conservators as soon as possible.The Victory Kitchen sign is believed to be the only surviving example of its kind in Valletta. It was rediscovered during restoration works in the early 2000s, with planning conditions requiring it to be protected.During World War II, Victory Kitchens were set up across Malta and Gozo to distribute food to civilians as the islands endured shortages during the Siege of Malta. By June 1942, there were 42 Victory Kitchens operating across the islands, serving thousands of meals every day.Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna described the sign as an important reminder of Malta’s wartime resilience and is urging the authorities to intervene before it is too late.“Urgent action is needed for the water to be immediately stopped or diverted… Please help us save this historic sign,” the organisation appealed.What do you make of this?•
