Hi everyone, or should I say Howzit. For context, my partner is South African and we’ve started talking seriously about eventually living there instead of the US. He grew up in Northern Johannesburg, and ideally would like to live there since that’s where his family and roots are, but reading some of the things i’ve seen - it seems like a big adjustment from the U.S. suburbs where I grew up. I wonder if Cape Town would be an easier adjustment. One of the biggest reasons he wants to move back is because he genuinely believes the quality of life is better, especially if you’re raising a family. His argument is that people have more time for family and friends, life isn’t as centered around work, and there’s more of a sense of community. I can definitely see where he’s coming from, but it’s also a huge move for me. I’d be leaving behind my family, friends, career, and pretty much everything I’ve ever known, so I’m trying to go into this with my eyes open. For anyone who’s made a similar move (or even just people who live in South Africa): * What was the hardest thing to adjust to? *Why should or shouldn’t I make the move? * Is Johannesburg as intimidating as people online make it sound? * Would Cape Town actually be an easier place to settle into, or is that just my perception? * If you have kids, do you genuinely think the lifestyle is better than in the US? * Is there anything you wish you’d known before making the move?   submitted by   /u/rumi_00 [link]   [comments]
