Transport Malta has issued a fresh reminder to mariners that distress signals are strictly reserved for genuine emergencies, warning that misuse could result in hefty penalties or even imprisonment.In a notice highlighting Legal Notice to Mariners 005 of 2022, the authority stressed that distress signals should only be used when there is an immediate need for assistance at sea.The warning covers all recognised maritime distress signals, including MAYDAY calls, emergency flares and SOS signals.Transport Malta emphasised that using these signals as a prank, for convenience or in any situation that is not a real emergency is strictly prohibited.“Distress signals must only be used in real emergencies,” the authority said, adding that penalties apply for misuse under Maltese law.The reminder comes as authorities continue to urge boaters to act responsibly at sea, ensuring emergency services are only deployed when lives are genuinely at risk.Share with someone who owns a boat!•
